4-5-4 Calendar

4-5-4 Calendar

The 4-5-4 calendar is a guide for retailers that ensures sales comparability between years by dividing the year into months based on a 4 weeks – 5 weeks – 4 weeks format. The layout of the calendar lines up holidays and ensures the same number of Saturdays and Sundays in comparable months. Hence, like days are compared to like days for sales reporting purposes.

The 4-5-4 Calendar also establishes Sales Release dates, which have historically been on the first Thursday following the month’s end. In recent years, however, as the flow of information has improved, more companies are releasing sales data earlier in the week.

The 53-week year

Dividing the retail calendar into 52 weeks of seven days each, or 364 days, leaves an extra day each year to be accounted for. As a result, every five to six years a week is added to the fiscal calendar. This anomaly has most recently occurred in FY12, FY17 and FY23.

4-5-4 Calendar FAQs

When and why was the 4-5-4 Calendar created?

The 4-5-4 Calendar, which is widely followed by retailers today, was derived in the 1930s during an informal inter-industry discussion. Prior to and during the 1930s, retailers used a straight calendar to report monthly sales. This calendar became problematic as Saturdays and Sundays became an increasingly large percentage of sales, since the number of weekends in a month varied year to year. A calendar that maintained the same number of weekends in comparable months was desired and the 4-5-4 Calendar was developed. Many stores began using the 4-5-4 Calendar in the 1940s.

What is the purpose of the 4-5-4 Calendar?

The 4-5-4 Calendar serves as a voluntary guide for the retail industry and ensures sales comparability between years by dividing the year into months based on a 4 weeks – 5 weeks – 4 weeks format.

What is a 53-week year?

Due to the layout of the 4-5-4 Calendar (52 weeks x 7 days = 364 days), which results in one remaining day each year, and the occurrence of Leap Year, it is sometimes necessary to add a 53rd week to the end of the calendar for sales reporting purposes only. This occurs approximately every five to six years, though this is not always the case. 2006, 2012, 2017 and 2023 are all 53-week years.

How does NRF determine the need for a 53rd week?

If, after laying out the entire 52-week calendar for any given year, there are four or more days left in January during the 53rd week, then a 53rd week is added. For instance, if you look at the 4-5-4 Calendar for 2016-2018, you will see that in 2016 there were only three days remaining in January after the 52nd week (January 29-31). However, in 2017 there were four days remaining in January so a 53rd week was added on to the end of that year.

How are sales during a 53-week year compared to the subsequent year?

For comparability purposes, the NRF 4-5-4 Calendar restates a 53-week year in the subsequent year (ex. 2017 is restated for comparability to 2018). This is accomplished by pushing each week of the 53-week year back one week, thereby ignoring the first week of the fiscal year (in this example, 2017). The benefit in doing so is to align holidays, which naturally account for a significant percentage of retailers’ sales. The restatement is shown on the 2017-2019 restated calendar. The first week of sales for 2017 begins on February 5, 2017, and ends on February 11, 2017, versus January 29 – February 4, 2017 on the 2017-2019 non-restated calendar. An alternative approach is to not restate and instead ignore the 53rd week of sales for comparability.

12 Municipalities Join the Festival de las Almas 2026 Program to Celebrate Day of the Dead

The second edition of Festival de las Almas 2026 brings together celebrations from different regions to strengthen the state's tourism offerings

From October 24 to November 15, the program will showcase Jalisco's traditions, heritage, and identity

JALISCO, Mexico, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- To promote Day of the Dead traditions, diversify tourism offerings, and showcase the state's cultural richness, Jalisco's Tourism Secretariat and State Entertainment Agency unveiled the second edition of Festival de las Almas 2026. The initiative brings together local celebrations featuring altars, exhibitions, parades, tours, and musical performances.

From October 24 to November 15, 12 municipalities will offer more than 350 free activities connecting the traditions of this celebration with each region's cultural and tourism attractions.

In its second edition, the festival doubles the number of participating municipalities from six in 2025 to 12. The program includes destinations in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, the mountains, the Lake Chapala region, the agave valley, Los Altos, and the coast, under the theme: one state, many identities, one shared memory.

The initiative brings local celebrations together in a statewide calendar to encourage travel across different destinations, expand visitor experiences, and create economic opportunities for communities.

San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Sayula, Mazamitla, Lagos de Moreno, and Cocula join the destinations that participated in the first edition: Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Chapala, Puerto Vallarta, and Zapotlanejo.

In Guadalajara, the El Espíritu del Charro exhibition will run from October 30 to November 13, featuring monumental catrina figures in Plaza Guadalajara, projection mapping on the Cathedral on October 31 and November 1, and a main parade on October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be theatrical nighttime tours of the Belén and Mezquitán cemeteries.

In Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, El Mictlán will be open from October 31 to November 2. The attractions include a monumental arch, the Alley of Legends, a performance of La Llorona in canoes on Lake Cajititlán, and the Tree of Souls.

San Pedro Tlaquepaque will offer approximately 80 activities from October 25 to November 2 under the program Living Tradition, Clay That Transcends. Highlights include the opening parade on October 25, the El Alabado procession on October 30, the Walk of Souls on November 1, and the procession of catrina brides on November 2.

In Zapopan, the Path of Corn will take over the Andador pedestrian walkway November 20th, while Tequila will connect its agave landscape with cultural tours, a traditional fair, and façade-decorating contests.

In Chapala, the waterfront promenade will feature a path of marigolds, and City Hall will host projection-mapping displays. The program is complemented by activities organized by Tlajomulco at Lake Cajititlán, where the atmosphere and depictions of Mictlán will give the celebration its distinctive character.

In Sayula, altars dedicated to writer Juan Rulfo and sawdust carpets will highlight the municipality's literary tradition. Meanwhile, Cocula, known for its connection to mariachi, will offer musical performances at the Mariachi Museum and the Templo de la Cruz.

In Mazamitla, catrina fashion shows and mountain cuisine will be among the offerings. In Zapotlanejo, visitors can admire the 22-meter-tall Catrina and cinematic sets that pay tribute to the local textile industry.

In Lagos de Moreno, the program includes a horseback parade featuring charros in formal attire and the Grand Offering of Los Altos Pride. On the coast, Puerto Vallarta will install Boats of Light and Guardian of the Ocean along the waterfront promenade.

The distances between destinations make it possible to plan trips from Guadalajara to Chapala and Tequila, just over an hour away; Mazamitla and Lagos de Moreno, just over two hours away; and Puerto Vallarta, less than four hours away, based on the travel times indicated for the route.

Through this program, the Government of Jalisco is boosting regional tourism, promoting the traditions that distinguish its municipalities, and expanding opportunities for families and visitors to enjoy Day of the Dead in communities across the state.

Time Is the New Luxury: Why Luxury Travelers Are Turning to Private Aviation to Get More Out of Their Trips

Analysis of 2026 booking patterns and client activity from SELECT Private Jets by Internova reveals how luxury travelers are redefining luxury around time, convenience and seamless travel experiences

NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Luxury travel is evolving, and increasingly, the most coveted amenity isn't a larger suite or a better seat. It's more time.

According to an analysis of 2026 booking patterns and client activity from SELECT Private Jets by Internova, luxury travelers are increasingly choosing private aviation not simply for exclusivity, but to maximize vacation time, simplify journeys and create more seamless travel experiences. SELECT Private Jets by Internova is part of Internova Travel Group, one of the world's largest travel services companies representing more than 100,000 travel advisors worldwide.

Rather than spending valuable hours navigating crowded airports, connections and fixed airline schedules, travelers are opting for direct flights that operate entirely on their own timetable.

"Today's luxury traveler is focused on making the most of every moment," said Kate Scott, Vice President of SELECT Private Jets by Internova. "Private aviation allows travelers to spend less time in transit and more time enjoying their destination, whether that's a family holiday, a milestone celebration, a major event or an important business trip."

In summer 2026, Europe continued to dominate demand among private air travelers, with Italy leading bookings followed closely by France and other popular European destinations. Within the United States, New York to South Florida and New York to Los Angeles remain among the busiest routes, reflecting travelers' desire for faster, more efficient access to both business and leisure destinations.

While pricing varies based on route and demand, private aviation can be more accessible than many travelers assume. On popular routes, costs shared among a full group can be comparable to last-minute first-class commercial fares while offering significantly greater convenience and time savings.

Seasonal experiences also play a significant role in private aviation demand. Ski destinations see strong winter traffic, while marquee events such as the Kentucky Derby, the Masters and the Super Bowl consistently drive surges in private travel.

During the holiday season, Mexico and the Caribbean become the destinations of choice for private travelers seeking warm-weather escapes. Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Providenciales, St. Barths and the U.S. Virgin Islands rank among the most popular destinations from Thanksgiving through New Year's.

Families are increasingly turning to private aviation as a way to simplify travel logistics and spend more time together. Direct flights, flexible departure times and the ability to travel as a group allow travelers to focus less on the journey and more on the experience.

For many first-time private flyers, the appeal is not extravagance but efficiency and convenience, the ability to avoid connections, fly closer to their final destination and make the most of limited vacation time.

As luxury travel continues to evolve, private aviation is increasingly being viewed not simply as an indulgence, but as a way to reclaim time, the one luxury travelers can never make more of.

SELECT Private Jets by Internova, formerly ALTOUR Air, provides private jet charter solutions through a trusted network of aviation partners, offering travelers personalized private air experiences around the world.
