Cancer Drug Spending Is Headed Past $400 Billion as Colorectal and Pancreatic Cancers Move Up the Research Agenda
Image File

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Equity Insider News Commentary - Global spending on cancer medicines reached $252 billion in 2024 and is forecast to exceed $400 billion by 2028, according to the IQVIA Institute, with the United States accounting for roughly 46% of the total. The pace of new treatments has picked up with it: about 150 new active substances entered the U.S. oncology market between 2015 and 2024, and launch activity in 2020 to 2024 ran nearly 40% ahead of the prior five years. Active Companies from around the markets with current developments this week include: Oncolytics Biotech, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCY), Revolution Medicines, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVMD), Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY), Genmab A/S (NASDAQ: GMAB), Exelixis, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXEL).

The past several weeks have shown how quickly that pipeline is turning into new standards of care. On August 26, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first broad RAS-targeted medicine for metastatic pancreatic cancer, one of the hardest-to-treat solid tumors. In the first two weeks of October, regulators approved a new first-line use for a blood cancer therapy, a first-line maintenance treatment for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer and a checkpoint inhibitor combination for stage III mismatch repair-deficient colon cancer, while two large Phase 3 trials in lymphoma and multiple myeloma reported positive topline results.

Gastrointestinal cancers are drawing a growing share of that attention. RAS mutations drive many pancreatic and colorectal tumors, and for years they were considered nearly impossible to drug. Colorectal cancer adds a second challenge: most metastatic cases are microsatellite stable, a form that has generally responded poorly to the checkpoint inhibitors that transformed treatment in other cancers. Companies are attacking the problem from several directions, with targeted RAS inhibitors, new drug combinations and therapies designed to make tumors more visible to the immune system.

Investors will get a fresh look at much of this work soon. The European Society for Medical Oncology holds its 2026 Congress in Madrid from October 23 to 27, one of the largest annual meetings for new cancer data, and two of the companies below have pointed to colorectal cancer updates before year-end.

Oncolytics Biotech, Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCY)

Oncolytics is developing pelareorep, an intravenously delivered immunotherapy designed to turn immunologically "cold" tumors "hot," and colorectal cancer is now at the center of its clinical plans. On September 28 the company reported accelerating enrollment in REO 033, a randomized study in second-line RAS-mutant, microsatellite-stable metastatic colorectal cancer that compares pelareorep plus FOLFIRI and bevacizumab with FOLFIRI and bevacizumab alone. Part A is expected to randomize about 60 patients, with objective response rate as the primary endpoint and progression-free survival, overall survival, safety and biomarkers as additional endpoints.

The study builds on REO 022, a smaller non-randomized trial in which the same pelareorep combination produced a 33% objective response rate, median progression-free survival of 16.6 months and median overall survival of 27.0 months. Oncolytics has said it aligned with the FDA on the concept of a potential pivotal Part B expansion, with a proposed accelerated approval path based on response rate and progression-free survival as the basis for potential full approval. Pelareorep holds FDA Fast Track designation in colorectal, anal and pancreatic cancer and has been administered to more than 1,200 patients.

"Given the current pace of enrollment, we expect to have the ability to report interim data from Part A by year-end," said John McAdory, Chief Operating Officer.

The company has also been adding scientific support around the program. In September it reported preclinical results combining pelareorep with a pan-RAS inhibitor in a RAS-driven colorectal cancer model, in which the combination showed no evidence of antagonism, and it announced a peer-reviewed publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that pelareorep changed the liver tumor microenvironment from immunologically inactive to active in preclinical models.

In other industry developments and happenings in the market this week include:

Revolution Medicines, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVMD)

Revolution Medicines announced on August 26 that the FDA approved RASONQUE (daraxonrasib), a once-daily oral tablet, for adults with metastatic pancreatic cancer who have received at least one prior systemic therapy or cannot receive multiagent therapy. In the Phase 3 RASolute 302 trial, median overall survival was 13.2 months with daraxonrasib versus 6.7 months with chemotherapy. The company has said it expects to share updated colorectal cancer data and strategy in the fourth quarter of 2026.

"The FDA approval of RASONQUE is a monumental step forward for patients with pancreatic cancer and for the oncology field," said Mark A. Goldsmith, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Chairman.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY)

Lilly announced on October 2 that the FDA approved Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib) for adults with previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia or small lymphocytic lymphoma without a known 17p deletion. In the BRUIN CLL-313 trial, Jaypirca reduced the risk of progression or death by 80% compared with bendamustine plus rituximab, with an overall response rate of 94% versus 81%.

Genmab A/S (NASDAQ: GMAB)

Genmab and AbbVie announced on October 5 that the Phase 3 EPCORE DLBCL-2 trial of epcoritamab plus R-CHOP met its primary endpoint in newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, reducing the risk of progression or death by 51% compared with R-CHOP alone. The companies plan to present the data at a future medical meeting and to engage with global regulators.

Exelixis, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXEL)

Exelixis disclosed that the FDA extended its review of zanzalintinib in combination with atezolizumab for metastatic colorectal cancer by three months after the company submitted updated safety and efficacy information, which the agency classed as a major amendment. The new target action date is March 3, 2027.

New Study Links ADHD to More Than Fourfold Higher Hazard of Cognitive Impairment
Image File
Original HTML

Dr. Daniel Amen calls for greater attention to lifelong brain health following research involving more than 187,000 adults.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A new JAMA Psychiatry study of 187,341 adults aged 50 and older found that 6.7% of participants diagnosed with ADHD developed mild cognitive impairment or dementia, compared with 3.4% without ADHD. After statistical adjustment, an ADHD diagnosis was associated with a 4.6-fold higher hazard of cognitive impairment.

For psychiatrist and brain imaging expert Daniel G. Amen, MD, founder of Amen Clinics, the findings reinforce a message he has championed for decades: Mental health is brain health.

"For too long, ADHD has been treated primarily as a problem with attention, behavior, or motivation," said Dr. Amen. "But ADHD is a brain-based condition. When we ignore the brain and the other risk factors that threaten it, we may miss opportunities to protect people's memory, mood, and long-term health."

Brain Imaging and Early Awareness

Dr. Amen's clinical approach includes brain SPECT imaging, which measures patterns of cerebral blood flow and activity. He believes evaluating brain function alongside symptoms, health history and risk factors can support a more individualized approach to care. The new study did not examine SPECT, and SPECT is not an established screening test for predicting dementia decades before symptoms appear.

"One of the most important lessons from our brain imaging work is that people with similar symptoms can have very different patterns of brain function," Amen said. "If you want to understand a person's behavior, you must also consider the health and function of the organ that produces it."

The 11 BRIGHT MINDS Risk Factors

Dr. Amen's BRIGHT MINDS framework highlights 11 areas relevant to brain health: Blood flow, Retirement and aging, Inflammation, Genetics, Head trauma, Toxins, Mental health, Immunity and infections, Neurohormones, Diabesity, and Sleep. ADHD may make certain health routines and coexisting conditions more difficult to manage, which makes individualized assessment especially important.

"ADHD does not automatically cause all 11 BRIGHT MINDS risk factors," Amen explained. "But it can make some of them more likely or harder to manage. And when risk factors accumulate, protecting the brain becomes even more important."

ADHD Is Not a Dementia Diagnosis

The observational study does not establish that ADHD causes Alzheimer's disease or dementia, and it does not determine whether ADHD treatment prevents cognitive decline. Dr. Amen encourages adults to discuss new or progressive memory symptoms with a qualified clinician and address modifiable health risks, including physical inactivity, high blood pressure, metabolic conditions, insufficient sleep, harmful substance use and untreated mental health concerns.

"Having ADHD does not mean dementia is inevitable," Amen said. "It means we should be more intentional about protecting the brain. The earlier we identify and address the risks, the more opportunities we have to support a healthier future."

His Amen WHOLE-4 approach also emphasizes Brain and Body, Mind, Relationships and Spirit. With National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month approaching in November, Dr. Amen hopes the research sparks earlier conversations about lifelong cognitive health.

About Dr. Daniel G. Amen

Daniel G. Amen, MD, is a double board-certified psychiatrist, founder and CEO of Amen Clinics, and an author and educator on brain health. For more than 40 years, he has advocated for integrating brain biology, mental health, lifestyle and brain imaging into psychiatric care.

Best Sharps Disposal for Infusion Services (2026): Sharps Assure Recognized for Convenient Mail-Back Solutions by Consumer365

NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer365 has recognized Sharps Assure as a notable option for organizations researching the best sharps disposal for infusion services in 2026. The recognition focuses on its convenient mail-back retrieval systems, multiple container capacities, prepaid return materials, tracking documentation, and structured approach to sharps disposal across a range of infusion environments.

Best Sharps Disposal for Infusion Services

- Sharps Assure - a provider of mail-back sharps disposal solutions with multiple container capacities, prepaid return shipping, tracking documentation, and disposal records.

Infusion services extend across many areas of healthcare. Treatment settings may provide IV hydration, antibiotics, iron, immune therapies, specialty medications, blood products, and other intravenous treatments. Many of these procedures generate needles, syringes, and other contaminated sharps that require appropriate collection and disposal.

Sharps Assure provides mail-back systems intended to help healthcare organizations manage that waste from point-of-use collection through retrieval. The range supports facilities with different treatment volumes, available space, and disposal needs, including smaller practices and organizations operating across multiple locations.

Mail-Back Disposal Supports a Range of Infusion Services

The sharps disposal requirements of an infusion practice depend partly on the types and volume of treatments provided.

A specialty clinic offering occasional infusions may generate sharps at a relatively modest rate. A dedicated outpatient infusion center operating several treatment stations throughout the day may fill containers more quickly. Healthcare organizations with multiple clinics may face another challenge, since waste volume can vary significantly by location.

Despite those differences, needles and other contaminated sharps need to be discarded into appropriate containers after use.

OSHA requirements state that contaminated sharps containers must be closable, puncture resistant, leakproof on the sides and bottom, and properly labeled or color coded. Containers must also remain easily accessible, upright during use, and replaced routinely before overfilling.

Sharps Assure addresses the next stage through a mail-back retrieval model. Instead of treating the collection container and disposal logistics as completely separate processes, its systems incorporate materials intended to support both collection and return.

The approach applies broadly across infusion services and is not tied to one particular medication category or treatment type.

Multiple Capacities Accommodate Different Treatment Volumes

Sharps generation can vary substantially from one infusion setting to another.

Sharps Assure offers several container capacities, including compact formats and 1-gallon, 2-gallon, 3-gallon, and 5-gallon configurations. This range allows healthcare organizations to consider actual usage when selecting a system.

Smaller containers may be appropriate for individual treatment rooms, lower-volume practices, or locations with limited available space. Larger systems may be better suited to facilities where sharps are generated consistently throughout the day.

Container design also varies across the range. Available products include vertical-entry configurations as well as larger options that accommodate horizontal or vertical entry. Those differences allow organizations to consider how the container will fit within existing treatment and disposal workflows.

Several practical factors can influence selection:

- Treatment volume: Higher patient throughput may require greater capacity or more frequent container replacement.

- Available space: Physical dimensions can matter in smaller treatment rooms and distributed clinics.

- Placement: Containers should remain readily accessible where sharps are generated.

- Entry design: Different container openings may suit different treatment environments.

- Waste category: Specialized waste streams should be evaluated separately and placed in products intended for that purpose.

These considerations help healthcare organizations choose a sharps disposal setup that fits different treatment volumes, available space, and day-to-day workflows.

A Structured Retrieval Process Extends Beyond the Container

Consumer365's recognition also considers what happens after a sharps container is ready for removal.

Depending on the Sharps Assure configuration, retrieval systems can include protective packaging, an outer shipping carton, sealing materials, instructions, prepaid return shipping, and shipping documentation.

Bringing these materials together can help practices establish the return procedure in advance rather than determining how to transport a full container only after it reaches capacity.

Tracking documentation provides another part of the process. Shipping records can help healthcare organizations follow the retrieval, while disposal documentation can support internal recordkeeping once the waste has been processed.

The structure can be relevant for smaller medical practices that generate sharps steadily but may not require the same waste collection schedule as larger healthcare facilities.

It can also support distributed organizations. A network with several treatment locations may have different sharps volumes at each site. Mail-back retrieval allows each location to select an appropriate container and follow the established return process according to its own usage.

USPS requirements apply to qualifying sharps waste sent through the mail. State and local rules may also affect medical-waste handling. Healthcare organizations should follow the retrieval system instructions and confirm requirements applicable to the facility and waste involved.

Sharps Assure Recognized for Flexible Mail-Back Sharps Management

Consumer365's recognition of Sharps Assure centers on its broader approach to sharps retrieval across healthcare environments with varying disposal needs.

The system is relevant to infusion services because infusion care spans many treatment categories. Hydration, antibiotic therapy, iron infusions, immune treatments, specialty medications, and other intravenous services can all involve the use of needles and related sharps.

Multiple container capacities allow organizations to choose a format aligned with waste generation. Mail-back materials provide an established return process. Tracking and disposal documentation support administrative recordkeeping after sharps leave the treatment location.

Specialized products are available when a particular waste category requires a separate approach, but general infusion sharps disposal remains the broader application.

For infusion providers evaluating disposal options in 2026, the appropriate system depends on treatment volume, available space, container placement, waste classification, facility procedures, and applicable regulations.

Sharps Assure provides a mail-back model designed around those practical considerations. The combination of different container capacities and a structured retrieval process gives infusion practices a way to match sharps disposal more closely with the way each treatment location operates.

Jeddah Hotel Rooftop Pool Built to Last with Penetron System

The Hilton Garden Inn in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was officially unveiled in late 2026, adding another notable luxury hospitality destination to the popular Red Sea resort. The Penetron System of crystalline concrete waterproofing products was specified to provide a durable waterproofing solution for the hotel's key concrete structures.

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- "A rooftop swimming pool on a luxury hotel presents potentially serious design and performance risks, with hydrostatic loading on an elevated structural slab and guest rooms below exposed to any leakage," points out Sam Annous, Director and Partner of Penetron Middle East.

While a traditional membrane system can offer installation speed, any membrane breach over the service life of the pool risks staining and damage to ceilings, walls, and guest rooms below.

"The project brief for the Hilton Garden Inn was to protect the below-grade concrete structures and deliver a pool that remains watertight for the life of the building without relying on a surface membrane system," adds Sam Annous.

The Penetron Middle East team specified an integral waterproofing approach using three Penetron systems working together:

- PENETRON ADMIX, dosed at the batching plant, transforms structural concrete into a self-healing, waterproof matrix that resists chloride ingress, carbonation, and chemical attack.

- PENEBAR SW45 swellable waterstop strips, combined with PENEBAR PRIMER, seal every construction joint and penetration, which are typically the weakest points in any water-retaining and below-grade structure.

- PENETRON slurry and PENECRETE MORTAR are used to address localized cracks and tie holes and to finish any visible defects.

Once exposed to moisture, PENETRON ADMIX reacts with calcium hydroxide and water to form insoluble crystalline structures within the concrete, sealing capillaries and static cracks up to 0.5 mm and reactivating when new moisture appears. The resulting resistance to hydrostatic pressure means the matrix itself becomes waterproof, with no surface layer to puncture, peel, or age out.

After commissioning, the pool was filled and held for testing. The walls of the floor below were found to be almost entirely dry, with no water leakage detected beneath the slab. PENETRON ADMIX performed as a standalone waterproofing system, with no membrane required.

"The Hilton Garden Inn in Jeddah is the latest Hilton Hotel project to specify the Penetron System," adds Sam Annous. "Our integral crystalline waterproofing solution continues to enjoy growing success across the region."

The Penetron Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs, and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives, and distribution channels.

SciBase secures first payer coverage with Highmark, marking a major commercial inflection point

STOCKHOLM, October 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ --SciBase Holding AB ("SciBase") (STO: SCIB) a leader in advanced technology for the detection and prevention ofskin disease, announced today that Nevisense has received its first positive medical policy from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of the largest Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations in the United States.

The decision marks a major milestone in SciBase's U.S. commercialization strategy and changes the reimbursement landscape for Nevisense. For the first time, eligible use of the technology can move from a predominantly cash-pay model into covered care through a major U.S. private insurer, reducing one of the most significant barriers to broader clinical adoption.

SciBase has already established strong commercial momentum in the United States without broad private payer reimbursement. The addition of coverage introduces a new growth driver to an existing business, expanding the number of dermatology practices and patients that can access Nevisense within a reimbursed model.

"This is a defining milestone for SciBase and an important step forward in the development of our U.S. business," said Pia Renaudin, CEO of SciBase. " Highmark coverage begins to remove one of the most important barriers to scale and creates the opportunity to reach a substantially larger portion of the U.S. market. Reimbursement now becomes an additional driver of growth in a business where demand for our technology has already been established."

The United States is SciBase's largest commercial opportunity. Approximately 6,500 to 7,000 private dermatology clinics operate in the U.S., with around 6,000 considered relevant for Nevisense, and an estimated 4 to 4.5 million skin biopsies are performed annually.

The Highmark decision represents more than the addition of a new payer. It begins to address one of the principal constraints on U.S. commercial scale and creates a pathway to convert established clinical adoption into broader reimbursed utilization.

Highmark, together with its Blue-branded affiliates, is one of the largest Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliated organizations in the United States, serving over 7 million members across multiple states.

For dermatologists, reimbursement can reduce the financial barrier to incorporating Nevisense into care for eligible patients while expanding patient access to objective, non-invasive technology that can support the assessment of suspicious skin lesions.

SciBase will continue its engagement across the U.S. payer market while expanding commercial activity in geographies where reimbursement is available.

What the policy covers

Under the policy, Highmark considers EIS medically necessary when a dermatologist is evaluating a clinically atypical suspicious pigmented lesion and is considering a biopsy.

The procedure is reported with CPT code 0658Tand the key criteria include:

- Melanoma is part of the differential diagnosis

- The lesion is on the trunk or extremities and measures 2 mm to 20 mm

- The patient is 18 or older

- The lesion is not on a mucosal surface, palm, sole or nail, and is not ulcerated, bleeding or recently traumatized

- The device is FDA-approved and used by a dermatologist trained in clinical and dermoscopic evaluation of pigmented lesions

- The policy applies to all Highmark commercial insured lines of business and to self-funded (ASO) employer groups that elect it. In support of its position, Highmark cites the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines for Cutaneous Melanoma (Version 2.2026), which list EIS among technologies that may aid detection of new primary melanoma, and American Academy of Dermatology guidance on emerging noninvasive diagnostics.

Cumulus Neuroscience and Transpharmation Partner to Carry Objective EEG Measurement from Preclinical Research into First-in-Human Studies
Image File
Original HTML

The two companies will work jointly with biopharma sponsors to provide a bridge between pre-clinical work and first-in-human studies, aligning quantitative EEG and cognitive endpoints across species so that a single objective measure of brain function follows a molecule from animal models into first-in-human trials. A cross-species analysis presented by the partners in February 2026 showed a conserved ketamine EEG signature in mouse, rat, dog, and human.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland and LONDON, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Cumulus Neuroscience, the digital biomarker company behind the NeuLogiq® Platform, and Transpharmation Ltd., a scientist-led preclinical neuroscience contract research organisation (CRO), have entered a strategic partnership to support central nervous system (CNS) drug developers through the preclinical-to-clinical transition. The two companies will engage jointly with biopharma sponsors preparing to enter first-in-human studies, aligning the quantitative EEG (qEEG) endpoints and behavioral domains evaluated in Transpharmation's preclinical models with those deployed on the NeuLogiq Platform in the clinic and in participants' homes.

CNS drug candidates have one of the lowest probabilities of success of any therapeutic area, with an estimated 6.7% progressing from nonclinical development to FDA approval (Sertkaya et al., JAMA Netw Open, 2024). One contributor is a discontinuity in measurement that occurs at precisely the moment a clinical development programme becomes most expensive. Preclinically, sponsors generate behavioral and electrophysiological data under tightly controlled conditions. On entering the clinic, the endpoint typically switches to subjective symptom scales and questionnaires, administered infrequently, in heterogeneous populations and noisy settings. When an early clinical study then fails, the sponsor is often unable to determine whether the mechanism was wrong, the exposure inadequate, the endpoint insensitive or the population unsuitable.

EEG offers a route around this discontinuity. It is objective, quantitative, repeatable, and ethologically relevant, and it can be recorded in substantially the same way across species. Transpharmation has a long-established sleep EEG and quantitative EEG (qEEG) platform spanning rodent and canine models, with 26 endpoints benchmarked against clinical gold standards and expertise rooted in its founders' work on orexin and sleep pharmacology at GSK. Cumulus brings NeuLogiq, a multi-domain digital biomarker platform developed with 10 of the world's leading pharma companies, pairing an FDA 510(k)-cleared, self-applicable wireless dry-EEG headset with tablet-based gamified assessments for use in clinic and at home.

Under the partnership, the two companies will work together with biopharma sponsors from the point at which an asset is transitioning to first-in-human studies. Rather than each company scoping its portion of the programme in isolation, Cumulus and Transpharmation will jointly advise on which EEG paradigms to run preclinically in view of how those same measures will be captured once the molecule reaches the clinic.

The rationale for the partnership was set out in February 2026, when John Huxter, PhD, Global Head of EEG & Data Science at Transpharmation, and Florentine Barbey, PhD, Senior Scientist at Cumulus Neuroscience, co-presented a cross-species analysis at the 6th Annual Psychedelic Therapeutics & Drug Development Conference in New Orleans, using ketamine as a translational probe. In Transpharmation's preclinical datasets, ketamine produced a consistent dose-dependent EEG fingerprint in mouse, rat and dog models: a reduced spectral power in the approximately 10 Hz theta–sigma band and increased power in the 50–100 Hz high-gamma band, with effects tracking an approximately one-hour pharmacokinetic window. In a Cumulus study of 30 healthy adult male volunteers, a double-blind crossover design comparing a sub-anaesthetic infusion of racemic ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) with saline produced a quantifiable increase in high-frequency power in the same direction, captured on low-burden dry EEG before, during and after infusion and again at 24 hours, with paired blood sampling enabling direct PK/PD linkage. A parallel Transpharmation psilocybin dataset showed selective suppression of REM sleep over four hours matching the time course of plasma psilocin, giving a physiological readout of CNS 5-HT2A target engagement rather than an inference drawn from peripheral exposure alone.

"Our clients benefit from decades of cross-species translational experience, and qEEG has long been one of the most predictive and back-translatable tools we offer," said Dr Mark Duxon, Chief Executive Officer of Transpharmation. "What this partnership adds is the other half of the bridge. Working with Cumulus means we can help a client design a preclinical EEG and behavioral package knowing precisely how those endpoints will be captured once the programme reaches the clinic — and that is a conversation worth having before a Phase 1 protocol is finalised, not after the data are in."

Continuity of measurement across all phases of clinical development only delivers value if the clinical measurement is deployable at scale. The NeuLogiq Platform is designed for use by non-expert clinic staff and patients, enabling structured sampling in-clinic, and high-frequency longitudinal sampling in the home, without the site burden that would otherwise make robust neurophysiological assessment impractical.

"Sponsors have never had a shortage of preclinical data — they have had a shortage of preclinical data that still means something the moment the first human is dosed," said Tina Sampath, Chief Executive Officer of Cumulus Neuroscience. "Working alongside Transpharmation, we can sit down with a client and align on what will be measured pre-clinically and what NeuLogiq will measure in Phase 1 and beyond. That gives drug developers something scarce in CNS: a continuous, objective line of evidence that does not break at the species boundary."

Cumulus supports precision in CNS clinical trials for its industry partners by enabling in-clinic and remote monitoring of patients across multiple domains of brain function. Sponsors with CNS assets approaching IND-enabling work or first-in-human study design can contact either company to arrange a joint scoping discussion. To learn more, visit www.cumulusneuro.com.

About Quantitative EEG (qEEG)

EEG measures voltage changes generated by the coordinated activity of large populations of neurons, recorded from the scalp or brain surface. Quantitative EEG applies spectral and statistical analysis to those recordings to produce objective measures such as band power, connectivity and phase locking. Because many CNS-active compounds produce clear dose- and time-dependent effects on specific frequency bands, qEEG can serve as a pharmacodynamic biomarker of target engagement, efficacy and tolerability. Its high predictive and back-translational validity, and the fact that comparable readouts can be obtained in laboratory species and in human participants, make it one of the more directly translatable measures available in CNS drug development.

About the Preclinical-to-Clinical Translation Gap

The transition from preclinical research to first-in-human study is often described as the "valley of death" in CNS drug development. It is not primarily an indictment of animal models. Failures are more often attributable to insufficient attention to target exposure and engagement, to the complexity of the human clinical population, and to a failure to make use of both human and animal data through common objective measures. Where the measurement system itself changes at the species boundary, a disappointing early clinical result becomes difficult to interpret and therefore difficult to act on.

About Cumulus Neuroscience

With a mission to generate the data and insights required to accelerate diagnosis and management of central nervous system (CNS) disorders for millions of patients and caregivers around the world, Cumulus Neuroscience is advancing NeuLogiq®, an AI-based, multi-domain digital biomarker platform to enable better, faster decision making in neurology and neuropsychiatry clinical trials and patient care. Designed for and with 10 of the world's leading pharma companies, the platform enables decentralized trials and is already making a difference in the development of therapies for Alzheimer's Disease, depression and schizophrenia.
