Provident Place Demonstrates Integral Concrete Waterproofing for Marine Environments

As coastal projects face rising groundwater salinity and saltwater intrusion, Provident Place in Pompano Beach, Florida offers a practical example of how integral crystalline waterproofing can help protect below-grade concrete structures in marine environments. In June 2026, The Penetron System was specified for the affordable senior housing community's foundation slab, retaining walls, and elevator pits.

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Designed by Anillo, Toledo, Lopez, a Miami-based architectural office, Provident Place is an affordable senior housing community for residents aged 62 and older. The development comprises two mid-rise buildings with 100 elevator-accessible rental apartments in one- and two-bedroom layouts, supported by amenities including a community room, fitness center, dog park, and covered pavilion with grills for outdoor gatherings.

For architects and builders working in coastal and marine-adjacent locations, the project highlights a growing design consideration: protecting below-grade concrete from water ingress, chloride exposure, and corrosion risk linked to saline groundwater.

"Increasing saltwater intrusion in Broward County, where Pompano Beach is located, and the resultant increase in the salinity of the community's groundwater can quickly lead to corrosion of below-grade concrete structures," notes Dale Williams, General Sales Manager for Penetron USA.

To address these durability requirements, Supermix, the ready-mix concrete supplier, provided a concrete waterproofing solution for the below-grade foundation slab, retaining walls, and elevator pits. PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, and PENEBAR, a swellable waterstop for concrete joints, were specified as part of the concrete protection strategy.

Once added to the mix, the active ingredients in PENETRON ADMIX react to form a non-soluble crystalline structure throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. This permanently seals microcracks, pores, and capillaries against water or liquid penetration from any direction, helping provide long-term durability in aggressive marine environmental conditions.

"Provident Place is just the first stage in an ambitious revitalization of the Golden Acres neighborhood in Pompano Beach," adds Williams. "There are already plans to add a further four hundred units, which will offer more opportunities to prove the value of integral concrete waterproofing technology."

The PENETRON Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives and distribution channels.

SISU truck runs on hydrogen and electricity - the chargeable battery-fuel cell hybrid answers the challenges of emission-free heavy-duty transport

SISU truck runs on hydrogen and electricity - the chargeable battery-fuel cell hybrid answers the challenges of emission-free heavy-duty transport

In late 2026, a pilot project exploring the possibilities of using hydrogen and electricity to power heavy-duty transport on long haul journeys will begin in Finland. The pilot aims to develop technology that contributes to the EU's objective of emission-free heavy road freight transport.

ESPOO, Finland, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The pilot project, led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, has introduced a high-tech hybrid truck combining electric mobility and hydrogen fuel cells in a unique way. The SISU Escalate truck, manufactured by Sisu Auto, runs primarily on electricity, and the hydrogen fuel cells serve as an alternative power source for quick charging on long haul assignments. The truck will start normal transport operation in late 2026, and its journey will be continuously monitored and measured through vehicle data and a digital twin.

"We will collect data on the technology, energy consumption, and overall functionality and reliability of different solutions. The vehicle will drive 540 kilometres per day, during which we will monitor how much electricity and hydrogen it is using," says Mikko Pihlatie, Research Professor at VTT.

The project involves several partners from Finland. The vehicle is manufactured by Sisu Auto, the battery system comes from IONCOR, Kempower supplies the MCS charging infrastructure, while Hevtec is responsible for the vehicle-side charging solution and the integration of the electric powertrain. The truck will be operated by Jylhä Logistics between Vuosaari harbour in southern Finland and the city of Jyväskylä in central Finland. The vehicle's first, full-electric version was tested in spring 2026 by logistics company Rauanheimo.

Monitoring reveals development areas

"By monitoring the truck for six months, we will gain data about the vehicle's performance, the ways different factors such as weather conditions impact consumption, and what limitations may occur in the operation of the vehicle. This information will help us develop the charging station network and optimise energy consumption," Pihlatie says.

The data will allow the pilot team to calculate the most economic ways of driving this kind of hybrid vehicle. Price data on hydrogen fuel and charging will enable the team to estimate how much energy should be loaded and where. The data is benchmarked against diesel-powered vehicles to assess cost benefits.

Finnish winter is a challenge

The truck will operate as an articulated vehicle and also take on regional distribution assignments in the Helsinki metropolitan area. It utilises Finland's first hydrogen fuel station built in Jyväskylä. There are charging stations at both ends of the long haul route, and a megawatt scale charging station will be built along it.

"A total of four trucks are piloted across Europe in this project, with different structures and power sources. SISU Escalate is the heaviest and longest of these. With its size and the difficult winter conditions in Finland, the operating environment of this truck is the most demanding of the four," says Pihlatie.

The vehicle will explore particularly how zero-emission powertrains and charging and fuel stations perform in vehicle configurations used in Finland and Sweden. The two countries use longer and heavier articulated vehicles weighing up to 76 tonnes, whereas in other parts of Europe, the total mass of articulated trucks tends to be around 40 tonnes. In this pilot, the gross vehicle combination weight is limited to 68 tonnes.

The truck includes a 650 kWh battery and, as a secondary power source, a fuel cell with a maximum power of 120 kW. Due to the hydrogen tanks and battery pack, the chassis is longer than usual for tractor units.

Truck full of high tech

The pilot is part of the EU-funded ESCALATE project, which aims to prove that a zero-emission heavy vehicle can operate reliably in real-world driving conditions.

"The SISU Escalate truck is not a product that will be launched in the market, but rather a means for testing the technology. With the learnings from the pilot, we can choose the best solutions for a product series developed for the market. The data will help us develop energy management systems and optimise driving with the battery to maximise the distance that can be driven with electricity. Hydrogen is, after all, the more expensive fuel," says Petri Kananen, Head of Development at Sisu Auto.

"Battery technology is a key element in the electrification of traffic. The pilot is carried out with a highly demanding setup: the modular battery platform must function in a 76-tonne articulated vehicle, in harsh winter conditions, and on a long-haul route," says Juuso Kelkka, Senior Manager of Technology Development at IONCOR. "With this truck, we can prove that a lithium-ion battery is a viable solution even in these conditions."

The vehicle will be on display at European Hydrogen Week in Brussels from 26 to 30 October.

About ESCALATE

ESCALATE is a project funded by the EU's Horizon Europe programme that brings together 37 partners from 13 countries to develop and demonstrate next-generation zero-emission powertrain solutions for heavy-duty transport.

The project not only develops new technologies but also helps build the broader ecosystem needed for the transition to zero-emission freight transport, including standards, infrastructure, and the knowledge base on which Europe's future heavy-duty transport system can grow.

Heavy-duty road transport is one of Europe's most challenging climate issues. Trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles account for approximately one quarter of the EU's road transport CO₂ emissions. Electrification alone is not sufficient to address the challenge, as long-haul freight operations require extensive driving range, full payload capacity, and rapid refuelling. Current battery technologies alone cannot fully meet these requirements.

AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging to Demonstrate Privacy-First AI Traffic Sensing at Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona
Image File
Original HTML

FREMONT, Calif. and BARCELONA, Spain, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging will exhibit together at Smart City Expo World Congress, November 3–5, 2026, at Fira Barcelona Gran Vía.

The two companies proposed AI-VIVA (Vision Intelligence for València and Arterials) and is selected as a finalist in the fifth urban challenge of Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility (BILM), on the application of artificial intelligence to traffic-light regulation. AI-VIVA combines AglaiaSense's edge-AI traffic solutions with Leopard Imaging's patented privacy architecture. At the show, the team will give a live demonstration of AglaiaSense's signature MS500 and GS500 cameras, with the AglaiaSense AI Box, powered by NVIDIA, which adds local processing to coordinate groups of neighboring intersections.

The cameras analyze images inside the device, using the Sony IMX500 and IMX501 intelligent vision sensors. They count and classify vehicles, buses, cyclists and pedestrians in real time. Raw video is discarded on the device within 400–800 milliseconds, and only anonymous metadata is transmitted. Cities can feed that data into signal-control software to adapt traffic lights to real demand.

"Cities want safer, smoother streets without turning every crossing into a surveillance point," said Leon Luo, CEO of AglaiaSense. "Being named a finalist in Barcelona tells us the approach resonates."

"Privacy has to be built into the camera, not added later," said Bill Pu, CEO of Leopard Imaging.

AglaiaSense's solutions are deployed across North America and Asia, and the company won first place in the Pedestrian Safety Challenge Hackathon, run by the Edge AI Foundation (formerly the tinyML Foundation) and the City of San José. In field tests, the systems achieved detection and counting accuracy above 95%. The City of Lakewood, Colorado, compared the GS500 with traditional IP cameras and LiDAR on real roads and found it more accurate, more energy-efficient, and less costly to deploy. At a high-risk crossing where pedestrians often crossed outside the crosswalk, the system alerted approaching drivers in real time.

CSL appoints Deborah Waterhouse as CEO & Managing Director
Original HTML

MELBOURNE, Australia, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of CSL Limited (ASX:CSL; USOTC:CSLLY) today announces that it has appointed Deborah Waterhouse as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of CSL from 1 February 2027. The appointment was made following an extensive global search process conducted by CSL's Board of Directors.

Ms Waterhouse is a proven commercial leader with more than 25 years' experience managing complex global specialty pharma companies across the U.S., the U.K., continental Europe and Australia.

Since 2017 Ms Waterhouse has been the CEO of ViiV Healthcare, a joint venture majority owned by GSK with Shionogi as a shareholder. ViiV is a leading specialist in HIV and had sales of £7.7 billion during GSK's 2025 financial year[i]. Additionally, Ms Waterhouse serves as the President of GSK Global Health.

Ms Waterhouse has previously led GSK's U.S. vaccines business and its U.S. Primary Care business and has held several other senior executive positions, including GSK's General Manager for Australia and New Zealand between 2008 and 2012.

CSL Chair Dr Brian McNamee said, "In February this year we said CSL's next chief executive would need the ability to continue the momentum of our commercial performance, renew our pipeline and simplify our operations without losing the science and purpose that built this great company. Deborah has done all those things on multiple occasions. Deborah is an outstanding global leader with a proven ability to grow complex businesses."

"She has grown a focused biopharmaceutical business and renewed the franchise at ViiV by driving the development and commercialisation of the next generation of medicines to support patients. She knows the United States, she knows Australia and she knows how to build pipelines and manage partnerships. A world-class and purpose-driven executive, she is the right person to lead CSL in its next chapter of growth. The Board's decision to appoint Deborah was unanimous."

Ms Waterhouse said, "CSL is one of the great companies in our industry, and I saw what it means to Australia when I lived and worked in Melbourne. Its people save lives every day, from the staff who collect plasma at the donation centres to the scientists and operators who develop and manufacture the medicines and vaccines. The foundations are strong. My job is to continue the momentum and evolve the path into reliable growth for patients and shareholders."

Ms Waterhouse will retain her base in the U.K. She will spend significant time in Australia, the U.S. and in CSL's major markets and operational centres. Gordon Naylor will continue as Interim CEO and Managing Director until 1 February 2027. He will conduct an appropriate transition with Ms Waterhouse and will resume his role on the Board as a non-Executive Director.

Respiratory Adverse Events of Weight-Loss Drugs: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 123 studies evaluating respiratory adverse events of weight-loss drugs largely in general populations, with only one study specific to asthma patients. Liraglutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide, and naltrexone-bupropion showed no increased respiratory adverse events versus placebo, though nasopharyngitis and upper respiratory infections were common across drugs regardless of dose. Overall trial quality was rated low risk of bias, but evidence specific to asthmatic patients remains sparse, limiting firm conclusions for that subgroup. Urgent Care clinical implications: There was no evidence of increased respiratory harm associated with weight-loss drugs compared with placebo, suggesting a reassuring respiratory safety profile in the general population. However, evidence specifically focused on individuals with asthma remains limited. Full Access: Annals of the American Thoracic Society

Reliability of Physical Examination Findings in Youths Diagnosed With Pneumonia

A national PECARN-affiliated study led by Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago examined 252 children diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia in emergency departments and found substantial disagreement between examiners on key auscultatory findings, including crackles, decreased breath sounds, and rhonchi. This mirrors earlier work (Florin et al., 2017) showing only fair-to-moderate interrater reliability for most CAP exam findings, with just wheezing, retractions, and respiratory rate reaching acceptable agreement. The authors conclude that physical exam alone is often insufficient to confidently diagnose pediatric pneumonia, reinforcing the value of adjunctive data. Urgent Care clinical implications: Current guidelines, including those from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, recommend that clinicians rely on physical examination findings to diagnose pediatric CAP in outpatient settings. However, the substantial variability in how these findings are recognized across clinicians suggests that use of auscultatory findings alone is not a reliable method for diagnosing CAP in youths. Whole-Blood Point-Of-Care Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein and Ubiquitin C-Terminal Hydrolase L1 Biomarkers After Traumatic Brain Injury in the US: A Prospective Diagnostic Prediction of Intracranial Injury on Head CT

This prospective, multicenter regulatory trial showed biomarkers have a 96.5% sensitivity and 96.5% negative predictive value for detecting traumatic intracranial CT abnormalities, with a 3.5% false negative rate, and none of the false negatives required neurosurgical intervention. Specificity was lower at 40.3%, and all 14 lesions requiring potential neurosurgical intervention were correctly flagged as “elevated” by the test. The biomarkers are FDA-approved and now included in the ACS Trauma Quality Program 2024 Best Practices Guidelines for reducing unnecessary CT imaging. Urgent Care clinical implications: A negative point-of-care GFAP/UCH-L1 result (within 12–24h of injury) can support safely deferring head CT and considering outpatient management/referral for a stable mild-TBI patient (GCS 15), while an elevated result still warrants ED referral for imaging given the test’s low specificity (high false-positive rate). FDA Authorizes Avulux Lens for Migraine-Related Light Sensitivity

The FDA granted De Novo marketing authorization to Avulux, an optical filtering lens for patients 12 and older with episodic migraine-associated light sensitivity — the first FDA-recognized device class in this category. Unlike traditional sunglasses, the lenses selectively filter light at 480nm (high blue) and 590nm (red/amber) wavelengths linked to triggering or worsening migraine attacks, while letting the rest of the visible spectrum through. It’s intended as a nonpharmacologic adjunct to standard migraine care, not a replacement, and is available over the counter. Urgent Care clinical implications: For patients presenting with acute migraine and prominent photophobia, this offers a low-risk, non-drug adjunct clinicians can mention alongside standard abortive therapy — but evidence for direct pain relief is modest and it shouldn’t delay or substitute for appropriate pharmacologic treatment, especially in moderate-to-severe attacks. COVID-19 positivity rates are rising across the United States, reaching 4.6% as of August 22, according to CDC data, even as the FDA has approved four updated 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccines targeting the XFG variant. The newly approved vaccines include formulations from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Sanofi/Novavax, with eligibility focused on adults age 65 and older and individuals with certain high-risk conditions.

While the overall burden of serious COVID-related illness remains relatively low, public health experts are watching closely after last year’s late-summer surge saw positivity rates climb to 12%. The seasonal increase has prompted questions about whether another back-to-school spike could emerge in the coming weeks.

Join Urgent Care professionals from September 23 – 25 at the California Urgent Care Association’s (CalUCA) Western Regional Urgent Care Conference in Santa Ana, CA.
