Powering local growth: National Grid invites local businesses to explore Pentir to Trawsfynydd project supply chain opportunities

Date: Tuesday 6th October, 08:30 to 12:30

Venue: Celtic Royal Hotel & Spa, Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 1AY

Businesses from across North Wales are being invited to learn more about potential supply chain opportunities linked to National Grid's Pentir to Trawsfynydd reinforcement project at a forthcoming Meet the Buyer event.

Delivered in partnership with Business Wales, the event will provide local businesses with information on supply chain opportunities, supplier requirements and procurement processes, as well as the opportunity to meet National Grid and its Great Grid Partnership delivery partners including Murphy, Morgan Sindall and M Group. Attendees will hear directly from project partners about potential work programmes and how local businesses can position themselves for future opportunities linked to the Pentir to Trawsfynydd project.

The project will reinforce and refurbish parts of the existing high-voltage electricity network between Pentir and Trawsfynydd, helping to deliver increasing volumes of clean energy across Wales.

Demand for electricity is set to increase significantly as the way we power our homes, businesses, industry and transport changes. Alongside the growth in clean energy generation, this will require continued investment in the electricity network. Delivering this infrastructure will require a wide range of skills, services and expertise, creating opportunities for businesses across North Wales.

National Grid has established long-term supply chain partnerships to support delivery of major electricity network upgrades. In 2025, National Grid’s supply chain spending in Wales was £116.2m. This investment is helping suppliers grow capability, create job opportunities and support the delivery of new and upgraded energy infrastructure. National Grid is committed to ensuring businesses across Wales are well placed to explore and compete for opportunities arising from its investment programme.

John Lamb, Project Director at National Grid, said: “Projects such as Pentir to Trawsfynydd represent an important investment in Wales' infrastructure and have the potential to support opportunities for businesses across North Wales.

“We want local companies to understand how they can get involved, build relationships with our delivery partners and learn more about the goods, services and expertise that may be needed to support the project.

“By working with businesses in Wales and across the UK, we can help strengthen the skills, capability and capacity of the domestic supply chain needed to deliver nationally important infrastructure projects.”

Kelly Thomas, Supply Chain Engagement Manager at Business Wales, added: “This event will help businesses from across North Wales better understand the Pentir to Trawsfynydd project, connect with organisations involved in its delivery and learn more about how businesses can position themselves for future work.

“We are pleased to be working with National Grid to bring businesses and project partners together and would encourage companies to attend and get involved.”

The event is aimed at businesses of all sizes, including those operating in sectors such as construction, landscaping, drainage, traffic management, surfacing, environmental services, haulage, site security, catering, accommodation and professional services, as well as companies interested in supporting major infrastructure projects in North Wales.

The Pentir to Trawsfynydd project forms part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity network in generations.

The event is free to attend and advance registration is required. Businesses can register via the Business Wales Event Finder.

Businesses interested in becoming a supplier to National Grid can find information on procurement opportunities, tendering processes and supplier requirements at: https://www.nationalgrid.com/our-uk-supply-chain and https://www.nationalgrid.com/suppliers/new-suppliers.

Connection configurations

Connection configurations

When connecting to the electricity transmission network, the connection arrangement offered will depend on several factors, including your location, connection requirements, available network capacity, and the most efficient way to connect customers in a particular area.

As part of Phase 2 of Connections Reform, National Grid Electricity Transmission is moving towards shared connection solutions, referred to as ‘bay sharing’, that make more efficient use of transmission infrastructure while supporting future network growth. These solutions help maximise the use of existing assets, reduce the need for dedicated infrastructure, and create opportunities for multiple customers requiring up to 450 MW of capacity to connect through shared facilities.

Connection solutions currently offered

Grid Parks

A Grid Park is a shared connection solution that enables multiple customers to connect through a single transmission connection point.

Typically used for smaller generation, a Grid Park uses a shared transformer and lower-voltage infrastructure to connect up to three customers through a common arrangement. Grid Parks are an established product already used across the transmission network and provide a cost-effective and efficient way to connect smaller customers.

Suitable for:

- Smaller transmission-connected customers

- Customers with requirements up to approximately 57 MW

- Areas where multiple customers can benefit from shared infrastructure

Find out more about some of our customers connecting into to grid parks here.

Super Grid Parks

A Super Grid Park is a higher-capacity evolution of the Grid Park concept, designed to connect larger customers or a greater number of customers through a shared connection arrangement.

These connections use higher-voltage infrastructure and are particularly suited to new substations where future network growth can be planned and accommodated. Super Grid Parks allow multiple customers to share infrastructure while maintaining flexibility for future expansion.

Suitable for:

- Larger transmission-connected customers connecting projects around 150 MW

- Locations where future customer growth is anticipated

- Shared connections requiring higher overall capacity

Banking Compounds

A Banking Compound enables multiple customers to connect through a shared high-voltage connection arrangement rather than each customer requiring a dedicated transmission bay.

This approach allows customers to retain a high-voltage connection while making more efficient use of transmission network infrastructure. By sharing a single transmission bay, multiple projects can connect in areas where dedicated bays may not be available or would not make efficient use of the network. These connections are suitable for customers connecting projects up to 450 MW.

Benefits include:

- Improved use of available transmission infrastructure

- Increased opportunity for customers to connect to the network

- Efficient use of existing substation assets

- Support for future connection growth in a particular area

Shared connection arrangements can help improve network utilisation and create additional opportunities for customers to connect to the transmission network. However, customers should be aware that these arrangements may have different operational characteristics compared with a dedicated connection, and these will be discussed as part of the connection design and offer process.

Legacy connection configurations

The following connection configurations may remain relevant for existing customers. They are generally no longer offered for new connection applications as part of our current connection approach.

Single HV Busbar Connections

Historically, some customers connected directly to a dedicated high-voltage (HV) transmission bay through a single HV busbar arrangement.

While these connections remain in operation for existing customers, they are no longer the standard connection solution for new smaller customers (requiring up to 450 MW) because a dedicated bay can reserve significantly more transmission capacity than many projects require.

Tertiary Connections

Tertiary connections provided a bespoke connection arrangement for individual customers using dedicated infrastructure. A connection is made via a third winding, known as the tertiary winding, of a Super Grid Transformer (SGT) rather than through a dedicated transmission bay.

Although a number of customers remain connected through tertiary arrangements, they are no longer offered for new connection applications due to their complexity and comparatively high cost when measured against newer shared connection solutions.

Minimum Site Interventions (Tee-Off Connections)

Minimum site intervention arrangements, often known as tee-off connections, provided a smaller-scale connection solution by connecting directly to an overhead transmission line rather than into a substation bay.

These arrangements remain part of the network for some existing customers but are no longer generally offered for new applications. Today's connection solutions are designed to support more efficient longer-term network development and future customer growth.

If you are considering a new transmission connection, find out more on the connections process and the steps you must take to get connected.

Transformer removals make way for next phase at Pelham Substation

Transformer removals make way for next phase at Pelham Substation

Two existing transformers have been successfully removed from Pelham Substation, making way for new equipment and marking a major construction milestone for National Grid’s North London Reinforcement project (NLR).

Each of the removed transformers weighed approximately 180 tonnes and had been in service at Pelham for around 35 years.

The removal completes a major phase as National Grid upgrades and expands the existing substation. It clears the way for the next stage of construction and preparations for the arrival of two new quad boosters, which will allow the substation to transmit more electricity and support growing demand.

Removing equipment of this scale required careful planning by National Grid and its contractors, Murphy and Equans, with around 20 people involved in planning and carrying out.

The transformers were dismantled in a phased and controlled manner, with the work planned and carried out in accordance with approved safety procedures and industry best practice. The phased decommissioning took around one month for each transformer.

During the decommissioning process, the team inspected components inside the transformers to understand their condition and how they had performed over time. The findings will help inform the design and management of transformers in the future.

Once these inspections were complete, a heavy-lift crane was used to remove the main sections of each transformer. These were then loaded onto specialist heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and taken off site for disposal and recycling, in line with all relevant environmental and regulatory requirements.

The team also removed supporting equipment, including the noise enclosure and air-insulated switchgear, as part of the works.

Karthik Ravikumar, Project Director at National Grid, said:

The transformer removals are a real milestone for everyone working at Pelham. Moving equipment of this scale takes a huge amount of planning, coordination and teamwork, with safety at the heart of everything we do.

“I’m proud of our National Grid colleagues and contractor teams who have worked together to reach this point safely. It is a tangible sign of the progress being made on site and clears the way for the next stage of construction, as we prepare for the new quad boosters.

With the existing transformers removed, work is now underway preparing the site for the two new quad boosters.

Quad boosters are specialised pieces of electrical equipment that help control the flow of electricity. The new units will increase how much electricity Pelham Substation can transmit and help keep the wider electricity system balanced.

Each new quad booster will weigh approximately 300 tonnes. Due to their size and weight, the equipment will be transported to Pelham in four separate heavy-lift movements. Each delivery will be carefully planned and coordinated to make sure it can be carried out safely, while minimising disruption to local communities and other works taking place on site.

Before the quad boosters arrive, teams will prepare the installation area, carry out piling and build the foundations for the new equipment.

The quad boosters are expected to arrive at Pelham between February and April 2027.

Further work will continue at Pelham Substation as part of the project’s wider construction programme. This includes working with UK Power Networks to reroute a short section of overhead line and underground some cables, allowing 11 pylons around the substation to be removed.

The existing overhead line route between Pelham and Waltham Cross will also be upgraded with higher-voltage cables to support the increased capacity at the substation.

NLR is a major upgrade of the existing electricity network between Pelham and Hackney. The project will modernise substations that have been in use for more than 60 years and will double the capacity of existing overhead lines.

To find out more about the NLR and the latest updates, please visit the North London Reinforcement site.
