Leipzig (ots)

20 Years On, Qinghai-Xizang Railway Continues to Reshape the Region

XINING, China, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A Report from Science and Technology Daily:

In the 20 years since it opened, the 1,956-kilometer Qinghai-Xizang Railway has delivered a remarkable record: 104 million passengers and more than 824 million tonnes of freight transported across the "roof of the world." The landmark project has transformed the region's connectivity, economy, and way of life.

On February 6, 2026, staff from China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co., Ltd. carry out maintenance work on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway in the heart of the Kunlun Mountains. (PHOTO: XINHUA)

Improving livelihoods

Stretching from Xining in Qinghai province in the east to Lhasa in the Xizang autonomous region in the west, the Qinghai-Xizang Railway has enabled people, goods, and the unique resources of the plateau to flow across mountains and valleys, boosting markets and industries.

The Xizang Gaerde Ecological Livestock Industry Development Co., Ltd., for example, located deep in the Qiangtang grassland, has leveraged railway cold-chain transportation to deliver perishable fresh milk to markets across China, helping increase the incomes of thousands of local herder households. At Qarhan Salt Lake in Qinghai, potash fertilizer production lines are seamlessly connected with railway terminals. In 2025, more than four million tonnes of potash fertilizer was transported by rail.

The railway has reshaped the economic landscape of Xizang and transformed the lives of countless people.

Every June, as cordyceps, a parasitic fungi with high medicinal value, enters its peak trading season, the Qinghai Jiuying Cordyceps Trading Market near the Xining railway station becomes one of the busiest places in the region, attracting merchants from across the country.

"In the past, we had to drive for days to purchase cordyceps. Now herders can simply take the train and bring their products here," said Ma Ke, a trader who has been doing business at the market for more than 20 years. "The railway has brought the market to life."

Today, the Jiuying Cordyceps Trading Market has more than 20,000 businesses and an annual transaction volume exceeding 10 billion RMB. During the peak season, more than 5,000 railway express parcels are handled every day. The railway has not only shortened transportation times but also helped bring the region's specialty products to the national market.

Where transportation networks expand, industries thrive. More and more agricultural and livestock products from the Qinghai-Xizang plateau are reaching markets beyond the region, while increasing numbers of visitors are traveling to the plateau. Over the past two decades, Xizang's GDP has grown more than ninefold, while Qinghai's economic output has also surged significantly.

Protecting the environment

The Qinghai-Xizang plateau is the source of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers and serves as a crucial ecological security barrier for the world. From the very beginning of its construction, the Qinghai-Xizang Railway adopted a comprehensive environmental supervision system for the entire railway line — the first of its kind in China. It incorporated wildlife corridors, constructing bridges and passages for animal migration, and restoring fragile alpine grassland ecosystems. These efforts have created a new model for harmonious coexistence between railway development and nature.

An over 1,000-kilometer green corridor stretches along the foothills of the Kunlun Mountains. Nearly 8 million square meters of vegetation have restored life to the once barren Gobi landscape, while dozens of wildlife passages have remained unobstructed.

Thanks to sustained protection efforts, the Tibetan antelope population in the Xizang autonomous region has increased to over 300,000 at present. Populations of other rare wildlife, including Tibetan wild donkeys, wild yaks, and black-necked cranes, have steadily increased, indicating a continued positive trend in the plateau's ecological health.

Expanding openness

On June 28, the first "Xining–Balkhan" Central Asia freight train departed from Shuangzhai station in Xining,Qinghai province. Carrying cargo in 55 container cars, the cross-border train traveled 5,420 kilometers, leaving China via the Khorgos Port. It then traversed through Kazakhstan before reaching the ultimate station in Turkmenistan. The entire journey took approximately 14 to 15 days.

The launch marked further expansion of cross-border logistics links between the Qinghai-Xizang plateau and Central Asia. Since the first international freight train service began operating in 2016, Qinghai's international freight trains have connected 16 cities in 10 countries, accelerating the development of a diversified, efficient, and interconnected international logistics network.

"In 2025, the Xizang autonomous region's total foreign trade value reached 8.479 billion RMB, surpassing the 6 billion RMB target set in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). Exports of combed pure wool yarn, wine, and Tibetan incense increased 80-fold, 17-fold, and twofold year on year, respectively," said Dan Zeng, an official at Lhasa Customs. "Products such as fragrant pork from Nyingchi and red wine from Shannan achieved their first-ever exports, while natural drinking water from the Ngari region successfully entered the South Asian market."

ESI Named ENR's 2026 Intermountain Contractor of the Year

NEWS PROVIDED BY

Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI)

BOISE, Idaho, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- When Engineering News-Record named Engineered Structures Inc. (ESI) its 2026 Contractor of the Year for the Intermountain region, the recognition reflected more than the scale of the company's recent projects. It recognized a contractor that has spent decades building a reputation for complex work, strong customer relationships, employee development, and long-term investment in the communities where it operates.

The award covers ESI's work across Idaho, Utah, and Montana—three states where the company has continued to grow while maintaining its roots in the Intermountain West.

For ESI, the recognition is ultimately a reflection of the people behind the projects.

A Regional Contractor with a Growing Reach

ESI's evolution from a regional contractor into one of the nation's larger construction firms has been built on a willingness to take on increasingly complex work without losing sight of the relationships that made that growth possible.

Today, ESI ranks among the nation's largest contractors, placing No. 105 on Engineering News-Record's 2026 Top 400 Contractors list. The company generated more than $850 million in Mountain States revenue in 2025, demonstrating the scale of its presence throughout the region.

That growth has come through a diverse portfolio spanning commercial, education, advanced technology, industrial, mission-critical, and other specialized environments.

But scale alone does not explain the Contractor of the Year recognition.

The award reflects ESI's ability to bring that experience to projects that are helping shape the future of the communities where the company works.

Building Projects That Shape the Region

Some of ESI's most visible recent work demonstrates the range and complexity of that responsibility.

In Boise, ESI is constructing office and parking structures as part of Micron's global headquarters expansion—work connected to one of the largest economic and technological developments in Idaho. The company is also completing major higher-education projects for the College of Western Idaho, including the Health and Science Building, which opened in 2025.

Other projects, such as The Chancery in downtown Boise, demonstrate ESI's role in transforming existing urban environments and contributing to the continued growth of the region's communities. ENR specifically highlighted the Micron expansion, the College of Western Idaho Health and Science Building, and The Chancery among the projects contributing to this year's recognition.

These projects are different in purpose, scale, and complexity. Together, however, they illustrate an important part of ESI's approach: the ability to adapt its expertise to the needs of each customer and each community.

Whether building an educational facility, supporting advanced technology infrastructure, or helping transform a downtown neighborhood, the work carries consequences that extend well beyond the construction site.

Success Starts with People

Behind every project is a workforce capable of delivering it.

That has remained central to ESI's identity as the company has grown. "Everyone Succeeds Together" is ESI's stated purpose, reflecting a belief that long-term success depends on creating an environment where employees, customers, trade partners, and communities can succeed together.

That purpose becomes particularly important as construction projects become more sophisticated and the industry continues to face challenges around workforce development.

ESI has invested in developing employees at every stage of their careers, creating opportunities for people to gain experience in the field, grow into leadership roles, and build careers within the company.

The result is a culture where experience is passed from one generation of employees to the next—helping the company take on more complicated projects while maintaining the knowledge and relationships that have supported its growth.

The ENR recognition is therefore not simply a measure of what ESI has built in the past year. It is also a reflection of the people who have helped build the company itself.

Growing Without Losing Its Roots

As ESI's geographic reach has expanded, its connection to the Intermountain West has remained an important part of its identity.

The company has continued to invest in the communities where its employees live and where its projects are built. That investment can be seen through its work in education, workforce development, charitable giving, and community partnerships.

The approach reflects a broader understanding of what it means to be a contractor in a growing

region.

Construction companies do more than construct buildings. They help create the schools where students learn, the facilities where businesses grow, the infrastructure communities rely on, and the places where people live and work.

ESI's recent portfolio reflects that responsibility. Its projects are helping accommodate population growth, support emerging industries, expand educational opportunities, and create new economic activity across the region.

That combination of growth and investment has become an important part of ESI's continued evolution. The company has grown dramatically from its early days, but its expansion has not changed the principles that have guided it throughout that journey: developing people, building strong relationships, delivering for customers, and investing in the communities it serves.

Being named ENR's 2026 Intermountain Contractor of the Year is recognition of how those principles have translated into results.

From major developments in downtown Boise to new educational facilities and the expansion of one of the world's leading semiconductor companies, ESI is contributing to some of the most significant construction projects in the Intermountain West.

The buildings may be the most visible evidence of that work, but they are only part of the story.

Behind them is an organization capable of bringing together thousands of people, decades of experience, and a shared commitment to building something that lasts.

For ESI, being named ENR's Intermountain Contractor of the Year is recognition of that work—and of the people and communities that make it possible.

Yale School of Medicine Awarded a Nearly $25 Million Grant to Map the Developing Brain and Advance Autism Research

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Yale School of Medicine (YSM) has been awarded a grant of nearly $25 million by the Aligning Research to Impact Autism (ARIA) initiative. The award, which is part of ARIA's Human Developmental Neurobiology Research Hub, focuses on building foundational maps and models of the developing human brain and clarifying how and when autism diverges from typical development.

Nenad Sestan, MD, PhD, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neuroscience, and professor of comparative medicine, of genetics, and of psychiatry at YSM. Credit: Yale School of Medicine

"We are very grateful to ARIA for their investment in Yale," says Nancy J. Brown, MD, the Jean and David W. Wallace Dean of Yale School of Medicine. "Their philanthropy is advancing a new era of autism research, which we hope will lead to an understanding of its earliest beginning in the developing brain. The impact of their grant will extend well beyond Yale School of Medicine, creating knowledge that can guide earlier detection, clearer biomarkers, and more precise interventions for individuals with autism and their families."

Co-led by Nenad Sestan, MD, PhD, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neuroscience, and professor of comparative medicine, of genetics, and of psychiatry at YSM, and Paola Arlotta, PhD, the Golub Family Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard University, this grant is designed to meet the scientific challenge at its origin point—early brain development—by building the foundational models needed to detect, interpret, and address developmental differences.

"My colleagues and I are profoundly grateful for ARIA's visionary support," says Sestan. "This award enables us to advance our research into the development of the human brain's neural circuits. By bringing together experts across disciplines and institutions, we aim to better understand how brain development unfolds and how autism emerges. Ultimately, we hope this work accelerates discovery, improves early detection, and informs more effective interventions."

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior, and often includes differences in learning, attention, sensory processing, sleep, or motor skills. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 31 children in the United States has autism. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1 in 100 children worldwide is affected.

A scientific "moonshot" for early brain development

Despite decades of neuroscience progress, researchers lack a high-resolution, time-lapse "map" of the developing human brain. "We have detailed maps of our planet, yet our map of the brain, especially the developing brain, remains incomplete," says Sestan.

The brain's earliest developmental stages are difficult to study directly because brain maturation unfolds over nearly two decades and research access to developing human tissue is limited. At the same time, the period when autism-related differences first manifest is also the period when the brain is most rapidly changing. Many neurons and most synaptic circuits form in the first years of life, meaning adult brain models cannot simply be scaled down to understand an infant or toddler.

Without a precise developmental reference, scientists strive to pinpoint mechanisms, identify early-life deviations, or design interventions that reflect the biology of a particular person at a particular time. Building on Yale's growing ARIA-supported work, this grant will enable a coordinated approach by integrating experiments, imaging, computation, and clinical partnerships to build that reference and translate it into discovery.

ARIA's investment in YSM supports two projects designed to deliver concrete tools and resources, including:

A high-resolution map of the developing brain's wiring

A cellular and molecular model of where autism diverges from typical development

These projects are part of a broader four-project collaboration with Harvard University, which also includes:

Patient-derived brain organoids to connect genetics, development, and clinical features

Generative AI to predict interventions and prioritize therapeutic targets

Relocating to a new automated plant allows the company to scale up production and deliver cost-effective, BRC-certified tube packaging globally.

GUANGZHOU, China, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Guangzhou Shangpin Packaging Products Co., Ltd. (Sprintpackage), an established paper tube supplier and integrated manufacturer specializing in sustainable packaging, relocated its manufacturing base to a new 20,000-square-meter facility in the No. 1 Hard Technology Industrial Park, Baiyun District, Guangzhou.

Sprintpackage's newly operational 20,000 SQM automated paper tube manufacturing base in Guangzhou, China.

Driven by a strategic need to expand capacity, the company executed this move in June 2026. As a direct result, Sprintpackage increased its annual production output by two to three times. This increased scale allows the factory to more efficiently fulfill global demand for premium cardboard tubes across the food, cosmetics, and health supplement sectors.

Tripling Output with Factory Automation

Sprintpackage directed heavy investment into its manufacturing infrastructure. Six fully automated production lines now run the entire manufacturing process in-house. This setup covers initial tube winding, slitting, paper mounting, curling, and final assembly.

Factory engineers installed a brand-new fleet of automatic tube winding machines, paper mounting equipment, rotary curling units, and high-speed assembly systems right before the facility opened.

With automation exceeding 80%, the paper tube manufacturer now produces between 200,000 and 300,000 units daily. This daily capacity guarantees stable, rapid supply lines of wholesale paper tubes and versatile paper tube packaging for global buyers primarily in Europe and the Middle East.

Trusted by Over 10,000 Global Partners

Brand owners and retail distributors look for structural integrity combined with a clean finish. Sprintpackage delivers this exact standard across its entire product catalog. The factory manufactures a wide variety of highly sought-after items, with notable examples including heavy-duty cardboard cylinder tubes and specialized cosmetic paper lip balm tubes.

Jack Wu, Founder and General Manager of Sprintpackage, credits this market traction to straightforward business practices.

"We produce mid-to-high-end quality at mid-to-low prices," Wu explained. "We put people first to build a strong internal team. We treat our clients with absolute sincerity to foster long-term partnerships, and we manufacture every single paper tube with complete honesty and trustworthiness."

Since 2014, these operating principles have helped the company secure and maintain active relationships with more than 10,000 clients.

Pioneering the Sushi Tube Category

The factory also moves fast on category trends. In late 2025, global demand spiked for specialized sushi packaging. Sprintpackage reacted immediately, becoming one of the first manufacturers worldwide to independently develop molds for dedicated sushi paper tubes.

Breaking the limitations of traditional, general-purpose formats, the company began supplying these custom paper tubes directly to more than 500 international sushi chains. This early move pioneered category-specific applications and established a clear trend toward vertically segmented tube packaging across the broader industry.

The new plant now projects an annual shipment volume of 10 to 15 million sushi tubes alone. These specific containers secure dual authoritative safety credentials: the European Union's EC1935/2004 food contact grade certification and the GFSI-recognized BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard for Packaging. By meeting these top international standards, Sprintpackage establishes an unshakable technical and safety barrier for the product line.

Dust-Free Production and Global Certifications

All food-grade paper tube container production occurs strictly inside a dedicated dust-free workshop. The entire manufacturing environment is BRC-certified and operates under a strict ISO9001 quality management system.

Sprintpackage consistently applies the strictest standards to every product it manufactures. The facility has obtained comprehensive certifications and factory audits, including FSC, BSCI, EC1935/2004, SGS, and FDA. Furthermore, the plant fully complies with relevant European PPWR requirements regarding packaging waste.

About Sprintpackage

Established in 2014, Guangzhou Shangpin Packaging Products Co., Ltd. (Sprintpackage) operates as a professional paper tube manufacturer producing cylinder containers and paper boxes. Running a 20,000-square-meter automated facility equipped with BRC, EC1935/2004, FDA, and FSC certifications, the factory supplies cost-effective, custom packaging for the food, cosmetics, and health sectors.

Sprintpackage bases its operations on a single philosophy: empowering brand value through green packaging. The company actively helps global clients achieve brand upgrades and maintain business growth.

New AI-native module extracts and structures data from carrier documents, census files, and bills, eliminating tedious administrative tasks for benefits agencies

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Outmarket AI, the leading AI platform purpose-built for insurance, today announced the launch of its expanded benefits capabilities. Outmarket's Employee Benefits module is designed to support the full employee benefits workflow cycle. The new set of AI-native workflows takes raw carrier documents, census files, and bills and turns them into structured, ready-to-use outputs. This allows agents to generate comparisons, cost models, reconciliations, formatted census files, and letters automatically, rather than relying on manual extraction, hand-formatting, and VLOOKUPs.

The new module addresses some of the most labor-intensive tasks in agency operations. Critically, while other solutions focus almost entirely on one workflow, like quoting, Outmarket's Employee Benefits module addresses the full array of manual processes that bog down brokers on a daily basis. The breadth of Outmarket's platform provides a single, unified system for the broadest array of insurance and benefits workflows in the industry.

"Employee benefits administration involves incredibly tedious manual processes," said Vishal Sankhla, Co-Founder and CEO, Outmarket AI. "Our platform is not a single boxed-in workflow but a broader toolset spanning commercial, personal lines, and benefits, built to remove the most manual and tedious tasks rather than replace one specific process. That's the Outmarket difference: We provide our customers with a robust and expanding suite of capabilities to automate time-consuming workflows."

Key Features of the Employee Benefits Workflows:

Compare Plans. Users can upload plan documents in any format, including PDF, Word, and Excel, from any carrier. The system extracts every plan and coverage it finds—such as medical, vision, dental, ancillary, and Rx tiers—to build a side-by-side comparison table with in-network and out-of-network columns. Users can then use a built-in chat to ask plain-language follow-up questions and draft client emails summarizing the analysis.

Cost and Contribution Analysis. Brokers can feed plan documents from up to 10 carriers, along with a census, to generate cost comparisons and any number of contribution scenarios . Users can override rates, set different contribution levels for employee versus dependent tiers, and automatically run affordability calculations.

Billing Reconciliation. By uploading carrier bills alongside enrollment data, Outmarket automatically flags discrepancies such as coverage-tier mismatches, premium mismatches, volume discrepancies and members present on the bill but missing from enrollment. The tool uses intelligent name-matching to avoid false positives and maps carrier plan names to census plan names.

Census Formatter. Brokers can supply any carrier's blank census template alongside a raw census file in any format, and the system auto-fills the template correctly without manual VLOOKUPs or reformatting. It can also merge multiple raw census files into a single filled template.

Broker of Record Letters. Users can upload plan documents and a sample AOR/BOR letter, and the platform auto-generates one filled letter per carrier found in the documents.

Census Comparison. Users can compare two employee benefits census files side by side, to quickly spot enrollment changes, demographic shifts, added or removed employees, or discrepancies between plan years. Instead of manually cross-referencing spreadsheets, it can run a detailed census comparison in seconds.

Open Enrollment Guide. Brokers can build the benefits guide that is shared during open enrollment with their client's employees. This exciting feature uses the document builder experience from the Outmarket Proposals workflows.

For insurance agencies, these capabilities deliver high-accuracy automation across account management workflows. Outmarket keeps accuracy close to 100% by continuously evaluating and swapping in the best model for each task and cross-validating between models. Furthermore, every extracted data point is color-coded by source file and clickable, taking the user to the exact spot in the original document for independent verification.

Output customization is highly flexible. Users can export any section to a branded Excel or PDF file, a custom template, an Agency Management System (AMS), or back into Vault document storage. Put simply, the Outmarket platform works the way insurance and benefits professionals work.
