- If approved, MOGENRY would be the first gene-agnostic treatment available for patients with retinitis pigmentosa having severe vision loss

- BLA supported by positive RESTORE Phase 2b/3 data and REMAIN long-term follow-up data

DALLAS, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanoscope Therapeutics, Inc. ("Nanoscope"), a biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing novel, disease‑agnostic therapies for patients with photoreceptor loss and vision impairment due to retinal degeneration, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted and filed the Biologics License Application (BLA) seeking approval of MOGENRY® (sonpiretigene isteparvovec, MCO-010), an optogenetic gene therapy designed for vision restoration for patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) having severe vision loss.

"FDA acceptance and filing of our BLA for MOGENRY is a crucial milestone that brings us a critical step closer to offering a one-time, in-office treatment option to the retinitis pigmentosa community with severe vision loss, who have no approved therapy today," said Sulagna Bhattacharya, Chief Executive Officer of Nanoscope Therapeutics. "The strength of our RESTORE data, together with the durability we have observed through long-term follow-up in the REMAIN study, give us confidence in MOGENRY's potential to become a new standard of care for patients living with RP having severe vision loss. We look forward to working closely with the FDA throughout its review."

The BLA is supported by positive efficacy and safety data from the Phase 1/2a trial (NCT04919473), and the RESTORE Phase 2b/3 multicenter, randomized, double-masked, sham-controlled clinical trial (NCT04945772). RESTORE met its primary and key secondary endpoints, demonstrating improvements in visual acuity at weeks 52 and 76. MOGENRY was well tolerated, with no treatment-related serious adverse events reported.

"Restoring vision is the most challenging metric to achieve in ophthalmic gene therapy — and MOGENRY seems to be clearing that bar, with years of improved vision alongside it. That combination makes this a milestone moment, not just for our patients with an unmet need and Nanoscope, but for our entire field. MOGENRY does not require genetic testing or administration in a surgical suite, which could enable broad adoption by community retina practices. If approved, MOGENRY could usher in a new era of RP treatment within reach of patients who do not have access to a tertiary academic center," said Allen C. Ho, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Thomas Jefferson University and Director of Retina Research, Wills Eye Hospital, and Chief Medical Advisor for Nanoscope Therapeutics.

Most patients dosed in RESTORE have continued into the REMAIN study, which provides long-term follow-up data in the BLA. If approved, MOGENRY would become the first gene-agnostic therapy to improve vision in patients with RP having severe vision loss.

"As retina specialists, we've watched plenty of promising drug candidates fail to show, let alone sustain, benefits for patients. What sets MOGENRY apart is a meaningful benefit, with evidence of sustained effect for years. Long-term durability is exactly what physicians need to see in a one-time treatment and know their patients can truly rely on it," said SriniVas Sadda, M.D., A. Ray Irvine, Jr., MD, Endowed Chair in Clinical Ophthalmology and Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine and the Doheny Eye Institute, and Chair of Nanoscope's Visionary Advisory Committee.

About Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare inherited disorders in which photoreceptor cells degenerate progressively, leading to impaired vision and eventual blindness. RP is linked to more than 1,000 mutations in over 100 genes. It is one of the leading causes of blindness among the working-age population in the U.S., affecting more than 100,000 people, of whom over 25,000 are legally blind. The rate of vision loss varies with the underlying mutation, but patients lose approximately 0.03 LogMAR — about 1.5 letters — per year on average, equivalent to roughly one line of vision on an eye chart every three years. A majority are legally blind (worse than 20/200) by the age of 60.

About MOGENRY (sonpiretigene isteparvovec, MCO-010)

Nanoscope's multi-characteristic opsin (MCO) technology utilizes a proprietary genetically engineered synthetic opsin to enable optimized performance in terms of high light sensitivity across a broad spectrum and fast kinetics. After Nanoscope's Co-Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer, Samarendra Mohanty, envisioned and invented the technology, his team has spent over a decade evaluating its performance across multiple animal models and human diseases. MOGENRY is an investigational, one-time, in-office, intravitreal optogenetic gene therapy built on Nanoscope's MCO platform. By delivering a multi-characteristic opsin gene to the highly dense bipolar retinal cells, MOGENRY makes these surviving cells directly light-sensitive, enabling them to utilize the remaining visual circuitry following photoreceptor loss. MOGENRY does not require genetic testing, invasive surgery, or repeat dosing, and is designed for administration within existing retina office workflows.

About Nanoscope Therapeutics

Nanoscope Therapeutics is developing disease-agnostic, vision-restoring optogenetic therapy for millions of patients blinded by retinal degenerative diseases. Following positive results from the RESTORE Phase 2b/3 multicenter, randomized, double-masked, sham-controlled clinical trial for RP (NCT04945772), the FDA has accepted and filed the Company's BLA for MOGENRY. If approved, MOGENRY has the potential to become the standard of care for patients with RP, administered as a one-time, in-office injection without the need for genetic testing. The Company has also shown promising results in the STARLIGHT Phase 2 clinical trial of MCO-010 in Stargardt disease (SD) (NCT05417126) and plans to initiate a Phase 3 registrational trial in 2026. MCO-010 has received FDA Fast Track and Orphan Drug designations for both RP and SD, along with RMAT designation for SD, and EMA Orphan designations covering non-syndromic and syndromic rod- and cone-dominant dystrophies, as well as macular dystrophies. MCO-010 has also received Sakigake and Orphan designations for inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) in Japan and an Orphan designation for IRDs in Saudi Arabia. A Phase 2 program for MCO in geographic atrophy is expected to start in 2026, and other IND-ready programs include Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA).

Recent Stanton graduate wins Humane Science Award from National Anti-Vivisection Society

Alan Alwakeel among five young scientists worldwide to earn a $3,000 prize at 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Alan Alwakeel, a recent graduate of Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville, Florida, was one of just five recipients of the prestigious Humane Science Award at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The award is presented by the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS), a nonprofit devoted to the advancement of science without harming animals and the only animal advocacy group invited to award a prize at the ISEF. Each recipient received a $3,000 prize in recognition of their outstanding humane science project.

Alwakeel's project, "The Virtual Cell 2.0: Expanding Precision and Personalized Cancer Therapy Through AI-Powered Simulation," utilizes progressive computational frameworks to evaluate the potential efficacy of different cancer treatments. By eliminating the need for animal testing, his work squares solidly with the purpose of the NAVS award.

Alwakeel's innovative platform has the potential to transform how -- and how quickly -- future cancer treatments are developed, tested and put into practice. Alwakeel's passion for accelerating treatment options is personal, motivated by a family member's diagnosis with an aggressive form of breast cancer. He believes new tools, especially data-driven approaches, can help researchers ask better questions and pursue answers more efficiently while advancing work that benefits both patients and animals.

"Alan's work proves that innovative, forward-thinking methods are always within reach if we open our minds to the possibilities," said Dr. Lauren Stein, NAVS director of science and research programs. "'The Virtual Cell' is a breakthrough research model that is faster, more effective and completely forgoes harm to animals. It's a wonderful example of why NAVS sponsors the Humane Science Award."

Alwakeel will attend Harvard University this fall, where he plans to continue developing "The Virtual Cell" platform while studying neuroscience and computer science secondarily.

Two other U.S. students, a Canadian student and a student from South Korea also were selected as Humane Science Award winners, whose projects were chosen from among more than 1,300 submitted to ISEF. As the world's largest pre-college science competition, the ISEF drew more than 1,700 top-tier high school students from over 60 countries and territories to compete for over $7 million in awards, scholarships and internships. NAVS has presented the Humane Science Award annually since 2002.

Cionic Real-World Evidence Study Examines Quality of Life Across Upper Motor Neuron Conditions
Image File
Original HTML

The TRANSFORM study is designed to follow 1,000 adults with multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and other conditions over 12 months, building a dataset of quality-of-life outcomes rarely captured at this scale in these populations

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Cionic, the company behind the first FDA-cleared non-invasive closed-loop neuromodulation platform for improving walking, today shared details of its TRANSFORM study, a 12-month examination of health-related quality of life in adults with upper motor neuron (UMN) conditions.

The study extends previously published pilot research, which evaluated the Cionic Neural Sleeve's impact on quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis. Quality-of-life outcomes in UMN populations are typically assessed in controlled clinical settings and at single points in time. TRANSFORM is designed to capture them longitudinally, in participants' own environments, and to examine how quality of life relates to symptoms that shape daily function, including spasticity, urinary incontinence, and fatigue.

"Roughly 30 million Americans live with mobility impairments caused by upper motor neuron conditions, yet their experiences are rarely counted in large-scale datasets," said Rebecca Webster, PhD, vice president of clinical operations at Cionic. "Our intention is to build a dataset to advance the understanding of key health-related quality of life measures, so that this population can more affordably access therapies that will have the most consequential effect."

TRANSFORM (Tracking Reported Activities and Needs for Self-care, Function, Outcomes, Relief, and Mood) follows participants across six surveys, at onboarding and at one, three, six, nine, and 12 months. Surveys are completed through the Cionic mobile application at a time and place of the participant's choosing.

The study's primary measure is the EQ-5D-5L, a standardized health-related quality of life instrument used widely in clinical research and health economics, covering mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain and discomfort, and anxiety and depression. Secondary measures address perceived spasticity, urinary incontinence, and fatigue.

"Our goal with this study is to build a more complete understanding of the real-world experience of those living with upper motor neuron conditions," said Jeremiah Robison, CEO and founder of Cionic. "The early results are very encouraging. Of the 60 people who have completed their first follow-up, we are seeing an average EQ-5D improvement of 26%, with improvements across all five dimensions: from mobility and daily activities to self-care and pain. Most importantly, we are starting to understand how to optimize usage to improve these quality-of-life outcomes."

The Cionic Neural Sleeve is an FDA-cleared Class II prescription device that delivers individualized electrical stimulation to muscles in the upper and lower leg to improve gait in people with neurological conditions. Unlike conventional functional electrical stimulation systems that target a single muscle, it uses the kinematics from the IMUs to coordinate stimulation across four muscle groups throughout the gait cycle. With both efferent and afferent stimulation, it improves walking by activating functional muscle movement and relaxing muscle spasms.

This study comes one year after the launch of the company's second-generation Neural Sleeve, which was recognized as one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2025. The original device made the same list in 2023.

Facts and Figures

In the four years since Cionic's first FDA clearance, the company has transformed mobility care from concept to impact, combining scale, clinical outcomes, and customer adoption.

- 750 million steps stimulated, proving the Neural Sleeve is a key part of people's daily lives

- 3 million hours of real-world use by Neural Sleeve users in just two years

- 94% of participants demonstrated improved gait in back-to-back paired tests

- 68% increase to foot clearance

- 44% improvement to ankle stability

- 30% improvement to spasticity reported by home trial participants using the Neural Sleeve 2, addressing one of the most limiting barriers to safe, independent walking

- Over 2,000 prescribers nationwide across 20+ diagnoses, showing broad clinical applicability for improving mobility

- 35 clinical, research, and advocacy partnerships, including the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Stanford University, the University of Washington, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America

About Cionic

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Francisco, Cionic is pioneering the future of walking through its non-invasive closed-loop neuromodulation platform. With the FDA-cleared Neural Sleeve at its core, Cionic is setting a new standard for mobility care today and building toward a future where people can move further, faster, and fearlessly, across conditions. In addition to being named to the TIME Best Inventions list, Cionic was named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies of 2026.

Stressfreier Urlaub?

Singapur (ots)

- Umsetzung von Artikel 6 und Vorbereitung auf die Regulierung des internationalen CO2-Marktes;

- Kohlenstoffmärkte und Klimasicherung, unter anderem durch dMRV;

- Energiewende, alternative Kraftstoffe und Energiesicherheit;

- Integrität der Lieferketten und Dekarbonisierung der Industrie;
