New i4cp Research Finds Most Succession Efforts Fail to Build the Leadership Depth Organizations Need
Image File
Original HTML

Only 40% of respondents say their organizations are effective at building bench strength, while organizations that get it right are nearly seven times as likely to report successful succession outcomes

BOSTON, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Succession planning is a familiar ritual inside many organizations: talent reviews, leadership programs, readiness discussions, and carefully maintained plans. But new research from the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) suggests many organizations may be focused on the wrong measure of progress: they have succession activity, but not the leadership depth needed to keep performance on track as business conditions change.

Based on a global survey of nearly 800 business and HR leaders, along with interviews with senior HR and talent executives, i4cp's latest study, The New Rules of Succession Management: A Blueprint for Future-Ready Organizations, finds that succession remains a clear priority for organizations worldwide. But despite that focus, only 40% of respondents say their organizations are effective at building sufficient bench strength for critical roles.

When organizations lack sufficient bench strength, every critical role becomes a potential point of failure—putting business continuity, strategic execution, and future growth at risk. Organizations that are effective at building bench strength are more than 2.5 times as likely to be high-performance organizations and nearly 7 times as likely to report successful succession outcomes. Yet too often, succession management is not connected to the business planning that defines what leadership will be needed next. Only 18% of respondents say it is highly integrated with enterprise business planning, and just 14% report strong integration with strategic workforce planning.

- Only 40% of respondents say their organizations are effective at building sufficient bench strength for critical roles.

- Organizations effective at building bench strength are more than 2.5X as likely to be high-performance organizations and nearly 7X as likely to report successful succession outcomes.

- Just 18% of respondents say succession is highly integrated with enterprise business planning, and only 14% report strong integration with strategic workforce planning.

"One of the study's most striking findings is that effort and infrastructure alone do not create bench strength. Organizations may have talent reviews, leadership programs, and succession templates in place, but the stronger systems connect that work to strategy, build leadership depth across critical roles, and keep readiness current as business needs change."

Tom Stone, Senior Research Analyst at i4cp and co-author of the report

The study also shows that stronger succession systems extend well beyond the executive suite. High-performance organizations are 2.5 times more likely than lower-performing organizations to include mid-level managers in formal succession processes, eight times more likely to include entry-level and frontline managers, and twice as likely to include critical non-managerial roles.

Taken together, the findings challenge the long-standing view of succession as a replacement exercise that begins when a role opens. Instead, the report frames bench strength—the depth, quality, readiness, and mobility of talent across the organization—as a more useful indicator of organizational health, future readiness, and leadership continuity.

"Too many succession conversations still begin with who is next in line, when the more important question is what leadership the future strategy will require. That shift changes the work. It requires organizations to evaluate leaders against future needs, build readiness through meaningful experiences, and continuously strengthen the depth and mobility of talent across the enterprise."

Heather Foust-Cummings, Ph.D., Vice President and Senior Research Analyst at i4cp and co-author of the report

What sets future-ready organizations apart is not especially complex, but it is still uncommon. High-performance organizations are five times more likely to integrate succession with business planning, nearly twice as likely to assess leadership candidates against future role requirements, and almost twice as likely to use data and analytics to guide succession decisions.

That gap is particularly notable as organizations move quickly to adopt AI. Only 16% of respondents say their organizations place a high degree of emphasis on evaluating leadership candidates' willingness to experiment with and use AI, even though the capability is closely linked to broader measures of future readiness.

"The organizations getting this right are not simply preparing for leadership transitions," added Stone. "They are treating leadership capacity as an ongoing business discipline. That is a very different model—and one that appears to be associated with stronger succession outcomes and broader organizational readiness."

The report includes 12 recommendations for strengthening leadership pipelines, including connecting succession more directly to business strategy, expanding succession planning beyond the C-suite, using talent pools rather than relying on single successors, developing leaders through critical experiences, and applying data and AI to improve decisions while keeping human accountability at the center.

For organizations navigating constant shifts in strategy, technology, and workforce expectations, the cost of weak succession management is no longer theoretical. Leadership gaps can slow momentum, stall transformation, and leave critical priorities vulnerable. The organizations best positioned for what comes next are those treating succession not as an HR process to revisit once a year, but as a continuous business discipline for building the depth, readiness, and mobility of talent the future will require.

"The risk for organizations is not simply that a successor may be missing when a leader leaves," said Foust-Cummings. "It is that the business may not have the leadership capacity it needs when strategy shifts, opportunities emerge, or disruption accelerates. Succession management has to become part of how organizations build resilience and sustain performance."

Heather Foust-Cummings, Ph.D., Vice President and Senior Research Analyst at i4cp and co-author of the report

Join i4cp's lead researchers live on September 23 at 1:00 p.m. ET for a public webinar exploring what separates organizations with strong succession outcomes from those still relying on replacement planning.

The discussion will cover what bench strength really means, why it matters more than a longer list of names, where succession planning most often breaks down, and what future-ready organizations are doing differently. Webinar registration is available at i4cp.com.

Catalus Capital Leads Nanoramic Series 2 Financing to Accelerate Global Commercialization of Neocarbonix® at $250 Million USD Pre-Money Valuation

Series 2 financing accelerates global commercialization amid growing customer demand and mass production shipments

BOSTON, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Nanoramic, Inc. ("Nanoramic"), an industry leader in advanced materials and energy storage technology company, announced today the first close of its Series 2 equity financing round at a pre-money valuation of $250 Million USD. The round is led by Catalus Capital with participation from GM Ventures, existing investors and co-leads in Nanoramic's previous Series 1 equity financing.

The financing comes amid accelerating commercial adoption, with mass production shipments of Neocarbonix® Slurry Precursor (NXSP) products now supporting programs with leading global battery manufacturers, automotive OEMs, consumer electronics companies, power tool manufacturers, and defense contractors.

NXSP is a drop-in battery manufacturing material that allows manufacturers to build higher-performing battery electrodes across all key chemistries in cathodes and anodes, while using their existing factories. NXSP enables higher performance, lower cost, and enhanced sustainability, including PFAS-free batteries and manufacturing solvent flexibility, for all major cathode chemistries and it enables up to 100% silicon content in anodes to support advancing performance requirements in mobile devices, drones, power tools, and other high performance applications. The drop-in capability allows manufacturers to lower production costs, lower electrode drying energy, and enhance cell-level performance without capital expenditure on new factory infrastructure.

Battery manufacturers across the globe are actively seeking materials that deliver higher performance, lower production costs, and compliance with strict, evolving global environmental regulations, such as the European Union's REACH restrictions and prospective PFAS restrictions.

By maximizing the active material within the battery cell and lowering internal resistance, NXSP delivers concrete performance improvements across major industries:

- AI Infrastructure & Edge Computing: Enables longer runtime and higher burst power delivery for demanding AI inference tasks.

- Stationary Storage (ESS): Lowers the cost per kilowatt-hour ($/kWh) and extends calendar and cycle life.

- Electric Vehicles (EVs): Increases driving range and enables faster charging capabilities.

- Drones & Aviation (eVTOL): Extends flight times and increases payload capacity.

- Consumer Electronics: Extends battery life and allows for thinner device profiles.

- Power Tools: Increases torque, reduces heat generation, and allows battery packs to be smaller and lighter.

"Neocarbonix has been demonstrated broadly across key applications, chemistries, and geographies, with mass production shipments growing over the past six months to meet customer demand," said John Cooley, Founder and CEO of Nanoramic. "We have demonstrated the commercial maturity and industrial viability of our technology. The support from Catalus, GM Ventures, and other investors is key to our global commercialization efforts."

"Nanoramic continues to demonstrate strong operational execution in translating advanced battery material innovations into scalable commercial products," said Stephen Fratamico, Venture Analyst at Catalus Capital. "We are pleased to lead this round as Nanoramic meets growing customer commitments across global energy storage, automotive, and defense markets."

"Nanoramic has advanced Neocarbonix from a technology concept into a production reality. Our continued participation reflects the team's ongoing progress and our commitment to innovation in battery materials," said Kevin McCabe, President of GM Ventures.

The $251B ICX Boom: Aragon Research Defines the Future of Intelligent Communications
Image File
Original HTML

The new ICX framework shatters legacy silos, merging unified communications and contact centers into a single foundation built for the era of AI and digital agents.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Aragon Research today announced the identification of a massive new enterprise technology category: the Intelligent Communications Experience (ICX). Projected to surge to $251.83 billion by 2031 (up from $152.13 billion in 2025), ICX shatters the historical silos between legacy unified communications and contact center platforms. More importantly, it establishes a critical enterprise beachhead for a new era of human and AI-driven agentic use cases.

For decades, enterprises have tolerated a costly, artificial divide between internal employee collaboration tools and external customer engagement systems. With customer demands escalating and AI agents rapidly maturing into autonomous digital workers, this fragmented approach is no longer viable.

ICX collapses these legacy silos, merging voice, video, messaging, and contact center orchestration into a single, cohesive architecture. This new unified foundation uniquely treats AI agents as "first-class citizens" alongside human employees, unlocking unprecedented levels of productivity and customer responsiveness.

"The separation of internal and external communications is officially a relic of the past," said Jim Lundy, CEO and Lead Analyst at Aragon Research. "ICX is not just a convergence of old technologies—it is the ultimate enterprise beachhead for the agentic AI revolution. By seamlessly blending human and digital workers into one cohesive environment, ICX will drive a completely new generation of autonomous business outcomes, from AI-led sales development to highly personalized, intelligent patient and customer care."

The ICX framework is built on four transformative layers:

- Core Capabilities: A unified foundation of enterprise-grade voice, video, and messaging.

- The ICX Engine: The evolution of the legacy contact center into a central interaction and orchestration hub for the entire enterprise.

- The AI Fabric: A pervasive intelligence layer powering automation, real-time analytics, and generative AI.

- The Agentic-Channel: A revolutionary new interaction model designed specifically to support and manage a blended workforce of human and AI agents.

The rapid emergence of the ICX market is poised to ignite a massive wave of vendor consolidation and M&A activity as legacy providers race to build or buy complete platform capabilities. For enterprise leaders, the strategic mandate is clear: adopt ICX to orchestrate your future blended workforce, or risk being completely outmaneuvered by competitors who deliver superior, AI-powered experiences at scale.

For more information on the Intelligent Communications Experience (ICX), the full research note is available to Aragon Research clients.

Instructure Announces Canvas Lite, a New Free Course Tool Built for Educators
Image File
Original HTML

New product runs on the Canvas platform and adds identity verification for every teacher who signs up

SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Instructure, the leading learning ecosystem and maker of Canvas LMS, today announced Canvas Lite, a new no-cost product that gives educators a simple way to build and deliver course content to learners. Canvas Lite is built on the Canvas platform that schools, colleges, and universities worldwide rely on every day. It goes live on September 30, 2026, at canvaslite.instructure.com. Educators can create a course, invite students and start teaching even if the institution doesn't currently have a full license.

Many teachers work outside a district or campus license. Canvas Lite provides homeschool educators, tutors, community instructors and teachers piloting a new course one place to organize materials, assign work, collect submissions and give feedback. Through Canvas Lite, teachers have complimentary access to the core Canvas tools at the course level without IT deployment or procurement.

"Individual educators have been part of the Canvas story since the beginning," said Melissa Loble, chief learning officer at Instructure. "Canvas Lite is how we keep showing up for them, with a free place to build a course and teach the way they want to teach. And there's a benefit for their students too. A learner who works in Canvas Lite this year will recognize Canvas when they walk into a high school, a college or a training program down the road."

Canvas Lite includes the Canvas tools teachers use most, including:

- Building modules and pages with rich content

- Collecting file, text, and URL submissions

- Running quizzes and applying rubrics

- SpeedGrader with support for annotations, audio and video feedback, and grade exports

- Built-in messaging, discussions, and course announcements

- Course-level integrations with third-party tools such as Google Drive, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams

- Canvas Teacher and Canvas Student mobile apps

Every teacher who signs up completes an identity check, using a government-issued ID and a selfie, through the verification partner Veriff. Students invited by a teacher do not complete that step. Canvas Lite runs on its own domain, separate from the Canvas environments that institutional customers use.

"We built privacy and security into Canvas Lite's core design," said Zach Pendleton, chief architect at Instructure. "Canvas Lite ensures that independent educators get a safe, reliable environment without compromise."

Canvas Lite is available worldwide at canvaslite.instructure.com beginning September 30, 2026. All Canvas Lite data is hosted in the United States, and teachers can find self-serve guides in the Instructure Community. The Canvas Lite terms set a 500 MB storage limit per course. Teachers who need more, or who need course analytics, attendance tracking or API access tokens, can talk with Instructure about a full Canvas license.

QA FAIL (need review): TARGET reverses the access relationship: it claims AskELIE gets access to Pine's subsidiaries, while SOURCE says Pine's 18 subsidiaries gain access to AskELIE. It also states the footprint extends 'beyond' the UK, USA, UAE, India, and South Africa, which SOURCE does not support, and places the 18 subsidiaries 'across the United States' without basis in SOURCE.

NATIONAL PUBLIC HOUSING MUSEUM ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION GIFT FROM BASKIN FAMILY FOUNDATION

Museum's Programming and Civic Space to Honor of Sheldon "Shelly" Baskin

CHICAGO, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Public Housing Museum, the first cultural institution dedicated to interpreting the American experience of public housing, announced a $1 million gift from the Baskin Family Foundation. In honor of the gift, the museum will rename its prominent public space as the Shelly Baskin Living Room.

Since opening in 2025, the Living Room has been the Museum's gathering space, fulfilling its mission as a cultural and civic anchor shaping the future of housing, hosting free programs and performances, and community gatherings.

It is being named in honor of the late Sheldon "Shelly" Baskin, a Chicago affordable housing developer, civic leader, and philanthropist. Guided by his philosophy of "doing well by doing good," he pioneered an approach to affordable housing that united nonprofits, faith communities, government, and business. Through these partnerships, he helped create and preserve thousands of homes for seniors and working families across Chicago and beyond, demonstrating that affordable housing could strengthen communities and enrich neighborhoods.

"Shelly was a devoted family man, loyal friend, world traveler, and lifelong White Sox fan. He brought the same optimism, curiosity, and generosity to his personal life that defined his professional legacy," said Judy Wise, co-founder of the Baskin Family Foundation, which supports forward thinking organizations with a focus on education and social justice.

"Shelly was a visionary, entrepreneur, and civic leader whose legacy endures in the communities he helped build, the lives he touched, and the belief that doing good is among life's greatest achievements. To have this space at the National Public Housing Museum named in Shelly's honor is a fitting tribute to his life and work, and we are honored by this gift," said National Public Housing Museum Board Chair Sunny Fischer.

The space will be dedicated during an invitation-only event later this fall.
