Yellowdish, The Fertile Cavendish Breeding Line

The latest breakthrough from Yelloway brings the banana of the future closer: familiar in taste and appearance, commercially viable and resistant to major fungal diseases.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Yelloway®, the innovation partnership between Chiquita® and KeyGene, has successfully developed Yellowdish, a fully fertile Cavendish breeding line. For the first time ever, Cavendish's genetics can be used in mainstream conventional breeding, allowing Yelloway to combine disease-resistance genetics with the agronomic and commercial qualities that make Cavendish the global standard.

Yelloway aims to develop new commercially viable banana varieties that resist diseases such as Black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt, and tolerate climate stresses such as drought and heat.

For broad consumer acceptance, future varieties will need to retain the preferred characteristics of today's banana: fruits that ripen from green to yellow, peel easily, have no seeds, and taste as good as – or better than – the banana consumers know today. With this breakthrough, Yelloway is closing in on delivering that new generation of bananas.

Cracking a long-standing scientific barrier

Cavendish is a 'triploid' banana, meaning it has three sets of chromosomes instead of two, which typically makes it sterile.

"For years, the only way to access its genetics was to perform thousands of manual crosses in the hope of producing just one or two seeds," said Fernando Garcia-Bastidas, Head of the Banana Breeding Program at Yelloway. "Now, however, decades of breeding experience, a deeper scientific understanding of the factors driving banana fertility and the application of advanced information technology have come together to produce entirely natural Cavendish plants that retain 100% Cavendish genetics and are also fertile."

These plants have been successfully crossed with disease-resistant Yelloway varieties, producing viable offspring that are now growing in Yelloway's breeding facility.

Why Cavendish?

Cavendish remains the backbone of the global banana industry. It yields well, can be harvested green, ripens en route to market and is loved for its taste. These qualities have made it the commercial engine behind the banana category for major retailers worldwide. Using this fertile line to breed new Cavendish-like varieties that also resist diseases such as Black Sigatoka and Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4) is Yelloway's next step toward a more sustainable banana industry.

With this breakthrough, Yelloway reaffirms its ambition to make at least one commercial variety available to key partners through early release by 2030.

Yelloway is a science and innovation partnership between Chiquita and KeyGene, established in 2020 to unlock banana genetic diversity and accelerate the development of disease-resistant, commercially viable banana varieties through classical breeding supported by advanced technology.

Bush River and Gunpowder River Bridge projects will strengthen reliability, capacity and long-term performance for key rail infrastructure in Maryland

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- HNTB has been selected by Amtrak to provide architectural and engineering services for the replacement of the Bush River Bridge and the Gunpowder River Bridge, two critical infrastructure projects along a 20-mile segment of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) in Maryland. The projects will support efforts to improve reliability, increase capacity and enhance long-term performance along one of the nation's busiest passenger rail corridors.

Together, the two bridge replacements play an important role in advancing higher-speed rail service while maintaining and improving operations for intercity, commuter and freight rail. The new bridge structures are expected to enhance system resiliency and reduce long-term maintenance needs.

"These projects represent an important opportunity to continue our longstanding partnership with Amtrak on infrastructure that is essential to the Northeast Corridor," said Christian Brown, PE, HNTB project manager. "Our team looks forward to collaborating to develop solutions that align with Amtrak's operational goals while supporting reliable service throughout the life of the project."

The Bush River and Gunpowder River bridges are part of Amtrak's broader effort to modernize aging infrastructure across the NEC, improving performance and supporting future service growth. Both structures serve a high volume of daily rail traffic and are critical to maintaining reliable operations across the corridor.

"HNTB's previous and ongoing work with Amtrak on complex bridge programs across the Northeast Corridor provides a strong foundation as we move into design on these projects," said Greg May, PE, LEED AP, HNTB Eastern U.S. rail and transit leader. "Together, we are focused on delivering solutions that align with operational needs, support constructability and provide lasting value to the corridor and the communities it serves."

HNTB has supported Amtrak on major bridge projects throughout the Northeast Corridor for more than three decades, including ongoing work on the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge replacement in Maryland and the Portal North Bridge project in New Jersey.

In HelloNation, Fitness Expert Allie Grantz Outlines What Beginners Should Know Before Starting HYROX Training

HYROX Training Combines Running and Functional Exercises in a Scalable Format Suited for Athletes at Any Starting Level.

EASTON, Pa., Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Is HYROX training only for elite athletes, or can beginners participate without prior competitive experience? a HelloNation article addresses that question directly, explaining how the format works and what new participants in Easton, Pennsylvania should understand before their first session.

HYROX is a competitive fitness format that pairs alternating one-kilometer runs with eight functional workout stations. The article describes the exercises involved, which include rowing, sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, wall balls, and sandbag lunges. Each station tests a different combination of strength and cardiovascular endurance, which is part of what makes HYROX training a comprehensive physical challenge.

The HelloNation article emphasizes that beginners do not need to be elite athletes to get started. One of the most important features of HYROX-style workouts is scalability. Nearly every movement can be adjusted to fit a person's current fitness level by reducing weight, modifying range of motion, or shortening distance. For someone new to the format, building familiarity with the movement patterns and establishing a baseline of endurance is the appropriate starting point.

Proper coaching is highlighted as a meaningful advantage when approaching HYROX training for the first time. A qualified trainer familiar with the format can teach correct technique, build a structured progression, and identify when someone is ready to increase intensity. The article notes that attempting complex movements like sled pushes or weighted lunges without guidance increases the risk of poor form and unnecessary injury.

Consistency is described in the article as far more valuable than early intensity for beginners. Showing up regularly, mastering the foundational movements, and gradually increasing challenge over time produces better results than pushing hard too soon and burning out. Fitness Experts and experienced HYROX athletes commonly describe the early weeks as a phase of learning rather than performance.

The running component surprises many newcomers. The article points out that running under fatigue after demanding functional exercises feels very different from a standalone run. The ability to keep moving through that fatigue is a specific skill that develops with weeks of consistent practice. Short intervals and progressive distance work help build that capacity over time.

The article also notes that HYROX-style training tends to appeal to people who value structure. Each session follows a defined format with a clear beginning and end, which helps beginners track improvement and build a sense of accomplishment from one session to the next. That structure also makes it easier to stay on task compared to open gym formats where focus can drift.

Community culture is another factor that helps beginners commit to HYROX training. The article describes these environments as inclusive, with participants at different levels working alongside one another toward individual goals. That dynamic makes it easier for newer athletes to feel comfortable before they feel fully prepared.

Fitness Experts consistently recommend that beginners in HYROX training prioritize recovery from the start. Combining running with resistance-based movements places simultaneous demand on the cardiovascular system, muscles, and joints. Sleep, adequate nutrition, and scheduled rest days help the body build tolerance for this style of training steadily and safely.

What Beginners Need to Know Before Starting HYROX Training features insights from Allie Grantz, Fitness Expert of Easton, Pennsylvania, in HelloNation.

Blood Cancer United Presents Inaugural Breakthrough Voice and Breakthrough Rising Leader Awards at First-Ever Night of Champions
Image File
Original HTML

Created as part of the newly reimagined Breakthroughs Summit, the inaugural Night of Champions celebrates the patients, supporters, researchers, volunteers, donors and partners advancing Blood Cancer United's Bold Goal of adding one million years of life for blood cancer patients by 2040. The introduction of the Breakthrough Voice Award and Breakthrough Rising Leader Award reflects the organization's commitment to recognizing individuals whose leadership and actions are advancing awareness, advocacy and progress across the blood cancer community.

"As we continue pursuing our Bold Goal of adding one million years of life for blood cancer patients by 2040, it is important to recognize those whose voices, leadership and determination are moving us forward," said E. Anders Kolb M.D., CEO of Blood Cancer United. "The inaugural Night of Champions celebrates the people behind progress. We could not imagine two more fitting recipients for our first-ever Breakthrough Voice and Breakthrough Rising Leader Award than Dr. Mukherjee and Charlotte."

Honoring a Leading Voice in Cancer Research

The inaugural Breakthrough Voice Award recognizes individuals using their platform and influence to expand public understanding of blood cancer, scientific discovery and the importance of continued investment in research. Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee was selected for his extraordinary contributions as a physician-scientist, entrepreneur, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and communicator whose work has helped millions better understand cancer, shaped modern cancer biology and advanced the promise of medical innovation.

"It is an immense honor to receive this award," said Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee. "Blood cancers are among the most lethal malignancies, and yet we have made radical advances in treating and even curing some of them. My own work has brought treatments and cures to thousands of patients, including some of the most indigent patients in India and South Asia. I am honored to work in this field which has had a deep impact on not just hematological cancers, such as leukemias and lymphomas, but has altered our way of thinking about all cancers in general. The lessons learned from blood cancers, such as targeted therapy, metabolic therapy and immunological therapies, have extended to dozens of other cancers. Once again, my own work on myeloma and lymphoma has shed light on breast and endometrial cancer, and I have been fortunate to develop novel medicines for these malignancies as well. I am honored to be a recipient of this award."

Recognizing a New Generation of Leadership

The inaugural Breakthrough Rising Leader Award recognizes an emerging leader whose personal experience, advocacy and service are moving the blood cancer community forward. At just 15 years old, Charlotte Nathanson, a two-time survivor of acute myeloid leukemia, embodies that spirit through her advocacy, public speaking, legislative engagement and fundraising efforts. She has also set her sights on becoming a pediatric oncologist, combining her lived experience with a desire to care for future generations of patients.

"I am incredibly honored to be the first recipient of the Breakthrough Rising Leader Award," said Charlotte Nathanson. "Surviving leukemia twice helped me understand what I want to do with my life which is to use my experience and my voice to help other children with cancer.  While I hope to one day be a pediatric oncologist, the work of fighting blood cancer has already started through volunteering, advocacy, and fundraising. Everything I do is driven by the hope that the next child and the next family facing blood cancer will have an easier journey and a brighter future."

A Reimagined Gathering Focused on Progress

Following the inaugural Night of Champions, the 2026 Breakthroughs Summit continues in New York City, bringing together leading researchers, philanthropic supporters, corporate partners, volunteers and advocates to spotlight scientific progress and explore the breakthroughs still to come. The reimagined event celebrates achievements in blood cancer research while fostering conversations that help accelerate future discoveries.

During the Summit's October 9 research programming, Blood Cancer United presented its inaugural Breakthroughs Summit Mission Impact Award to Sarah K. Tasian, M.D. Ph.D., a pediatric oncologist, leukemia researcher, and director of the Hematologic Malignancies Program at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The award recognizes a researcher whose scientific contributions and commitment to Blood Cancer United's mission have helped advance progress for patients and families. A Blood Cancer United-funded researcher, grant reviewer, volunteer, fundraiser and member of the leadership team for Blood Cancer United's PedAL Master Clinical Trial, Dr. Tasian exemplifies the partnership between scientific innovation and mission engagement.

"Receipt of this Blood Cancer United Breakthroughs Summit Mission Impact Award in recognition of our scientific accomplishments is a wonderful and deeply appreciated surprise," noted Dr. Tasian. "My Scholar career development award funded from 2021 to 2026 was instrumental in strengthening and accelerating our laboratory and clinical trials research programs focused upon precision medicine therapies for children with high-risk leukemias, including ALL, AML, and JMML. We have made highly impactful bench-to-bedside and bedside-back-to-bench biologic and therapeutic discoveries during the past five years and advanced existing or established new research collaborations. I am delighted to continue our translational childhood leukemia studies via other current Blood Cancer United laboratory research funding and our international Pediatric Acute Leukemia (PedAL) Initiative/Dare to Dream clinical trials efforts, as well as to serve more locally as a volunteer with our Eastern Pennsylvania-Delaware Region."

The inaugural Night of Champions was hosted by Savannah Sellers, co-anchor of Morning News NOW and correspondent for NBC News, and featured patient stories, award presentations and reflections on decades of progress in blood cancer research.

Support for the 2026 Breakthroughs Summit was provided by Royalty Pharma and Lilly.

Lean SuperIntelligence (LSI) Closes Initial Financing and Announces First Self-Improving, On-Premise, Lean Cybersecurity Models Beyond Mythos™
Image File

Self-improving cybersecurity LLMs do offense–defense interplay in customizable on-prem deployments and run at massively lower cost.

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Lean SuperIntelligence (LSI) is the first AI lab to build self-improving offense and defense security LLMs that enable enterprises to stay ahead of attackers without renting out their data to the cloud. The two models improve each other: LSI-Offense-1 LLM finds, exploits, and validates vulnerabilities and LSI-Defense-1 LLM detects, investigates, and responds within minutes, not days to weeks. Inside LSI's Cyber World Models, every attack the offense finds becomes a lesson for the defense, and every defense that holds forces the offense to find a new path, so both models keep getting better on customers' own data. Customizable and air-gapped, they beat frontier LLMs at vulnerability discovery and threat detection, and they are lean enough to run continuously, scanning every check-in software developers make. LSI's pre-seed round is backed by leading investors and angels who have led AI and security at OpenAI, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Zscaler, Commvault, and Gruve AI.

Outperforming frontier models on offense and defense

On independent, real-world offense security benchmarks, LSI-Offense-1 LLM significantly outperforms frontier models including Claude Mythos™, GPT-6 and Gemini-3.8-Cyber at autonomously discovering, exploiting and validating vulnerabilities. The model has already uncovered previously unknown vulnerabilities. The results show that specialized, lean cybersecurity models can exceed general-purpose frontier models.

On public defense benchmarks spanning multi-step threat detection, investigation, and response, LSI-Defense-1 LLM significantly outperforms frontier models from the same labs at a fraction of their cost, triaging alerts, correlating telemetry, and returning verdicts in seconds with far fewer false positives.

Why it matters

- Attacks move in minutes. A rumoured vulnerability becomes a working exploit in under 10 minutes; defense must keep pace on every event.

- Enterprises want to own, not rent. Today they send code and telemetry to frontier labs, pay hundreds of millions in inference, and own nothing they learn. That's why two-thirds of enterprises moved AI workloads back on-prem last year,[1] and sovereign cloud spending hits $80B in 2026.[2]

LSI gives enterprises self-improving security models they own.

Founded by the team behind National / Sovereign LLMs, the first AI Guardrails, AI labs at Alexa, Uber AI and Salesforce Research — and elite security experts.

- Chandra Khatri, Founder and CEO of LSI, with more than 50 patents and publications, was Founding Head of AI at Krutrim, where he built India's first sovereign LLM in 2023. He co-founded Got It AI, where he built ELMAR, the first enterprise LLM, and TruthChecker, the world's first hallucination guardrails model (acquired). He led AI initiatives at Uber AI, Amazon Alexa AI, and eBay Research.

- LSI's founding engineers have built sovereign AI and foundation models end to end, from pre-training data to production deployment to 10s of millions of users.

- LSI's founding security team has discovered hundreds of critical CVEs for major organizations and national intelligence agencies.

Comments

"You cannot defend against an attack you have never seen. So we trained the Offense LLM first," said Chandra Khatri, Founder and CEO of LSI. "Our LSI-Offense-1 LLM is built to be a generation ahead of the attacks in the wild, and our LSI-Defense-1 LLM learns from every attack LSI-Offense-1 finds. Frontier labs give everyone the same model. We provide each enterprise its own customizable model, running on-premise and trained on its own private data."

"Chandra has spent his career building at each major wave of AI — Alexa, Uber AI, enterprise LLMs and guardrails at Got It AI, and India's first sovereign LLM. LSI is the natural next step." — Lu Zhang, Founder & Managing Partner, Fusion Fund

Americans with Kidney, Cardiac, and Metabolic Disorders Target Barriers to Care Choice

Newly Registered Voters Motivated by Medical Innovation and Living Organ Donor Protections

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), the nation's oldest and largest independent kidney patient advocacy organization, today marked the midpoint of its 2026 national, nonpartisan KidneyVoter™ campaign, "50 States in 50 Days." Launched on September 14, 2026, the campaign has successfully engaged and mobilized key constituencies across 25 states. The campaign engages kidney patients, living organ donors, families, care partners, advocates, researchers, healthcare professionals, and employees of small and large companies involved in kidney, heart, and diabetes care innovation. The 2026 effort has also reached patient and professional communities impacted by Cardio-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Syndrome and includes heart disease advocates, the diabetes community, and patients suffering from bone and mineral disorders

Kidney disease impacts more than 37 million Americans and their families. Further, interrelated cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic diseases have impacted more than 25% of the adult population and are a leading cause of death. More broadly, an estimated 90% of U.S. adults, or approximately 240 million people, have some degree of interconnected cardiovascular, kidney, or metabolic health conditions according to the American Heart Association.

For the remainder of October, the KidneyVoter™ campaign will focus on states with populations highly impacted by the burdens of multiple chronic diseases, including Maine, Texas, New Hampshire, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Montana, Florida, Washington, Iowa, and others. AAKP's 2026 strategy incorporates tactics refined during its successful 2024 KidneyVoter™ program that engaged over 500,000 KidneyVoters™. According to election data science and targeting experts, the 2024 campaign created a new "micro-constituency" within the American electorate. By the 2028 election cycle, AAKP estimates the KidneyVoter™ program will engage over one million Americans impacted by kidney and other chronic diseases and organ failure.

AAKP President Edward V. Hickey, III, a chronic kidney disease patient, stated, "At the midpoint of our 2026 nonpartisan voter registration campaign, it is clear that the people AAKP has engaged are highly motivated voters. They are determined to send a message to every candidate that issues affecting their health, and the health of their loved ones, are too often overlooked. Those issues include permanently protecting the jobs of living organ donors under the FMLA, speeding FDA approval of a new generation of safer transplant medicines, and adopting common-sense Medicare payment reforms so patients can get life-saving innovations while they still have time to benefit." Hickey is a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, a former senior Congressional aide, and has served in appointed roles in two presidential administrations. He currently serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Nephrology Specialty Board and as the Chair of the AAKP Veterans Health Initiative, the largest kidney health outreach program outside of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

KidneyVoters™ use their social media networks, voices, and votes to bring Congressional and White House attention to issues that undermine America's efforts to save more innocent lives from chronic diseases and to reduce health spending. Top issues include the lack of kidney and chronic disease awareness and prevention, long-overdue early disease screening, anti-competitive practices of America's large corporate dialysis providers, utilization of discriminatory Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY) measures, and negative Government Determinants of Health (GDOH) including obsolete federal regulations and Medicare reimbursement policies that stymie innovation and patient choice of new treatments. In 2024, AAKP patient advocates led the kidney community by calling for the immediate dismissal of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) leadership, citing USPSTF's 20-year record of incompetence and failure to issue a screening recommendation for kidney disease for the most vulnerable Americans. The USPSTF failure occurred despite USPSTF's access to overwhelming peer-reviewed evidence of the dangers of disease progression, high mortality rates among organ failure patients, increased utilization of taxpayer-funded dialysis, and growing demand for donated organs. AAKP has expressed strong support for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy's recent appointments to the USPSTF of specialists familiar with interrelated heart, kidney, and metabolic issues.

AAKP Vice President and Chair of Policy and Global Affairs Paul T. Conway, a 49-year kidney patient and 29-year transplant recipient, stated, "People impacted by multiple chronic diseases, including kidney disease, understand the role elected and appointed leaders play in their personal health, science, and medical innovation as well as the availability of new, lifesaving diagnostics and treatments. They are sophisticated healthcare consumers and reject the idea of paying for avoidable medical interventions, with their own money or taxpayer funds, when new technologies allow for earlier disease detection and treatment and the avoidance of emergencies that jeopardize lives and livelihoods. Across the nation, from Maine to Washington, patients and families are angry with political leaders and medical elites that appear more committed to defending special interests and paternalistic systems than solving the everyday health needs of people and the frontline doctors they trust." Conway is a former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Department of Labor and a former Deputy Secretary for Health and Human Resources for Virginia. He is the past Chair of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Patient Engagement Advisory Committee (PEAC) and a member of the American Diabetes Association's Kidney Disease Workgroup.

AAKP has leveraged the KidneyVoter™ program to educate people nationwide on the plight of those awaiting organ transplants and the overwhelming need to increase living organ donation. Increased living organ donation, improved transplant readiness, and greater opportunities for transplantation are national goals reinforced in 2019 through President Donald Trump's bipartisan Executive Order on Advancing American Kidney Health. AAKP, alongside a broad coalition of patient organizations, transplant experts, and Congressional allies, is working to secure passage of the bipartisan Living Donor Protection Act (LDPA), S. 1552/H.R. 4582 and H.R. 4583. The legislation protects living organ donors from job and insurance discrimination based solely on their decision to donate a kidney to save another life, barriers cited most often by potential organ donors. The bipartisan bill is led by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). It was voted out of the Senate HELP Committee on February 26, 2026, with full bipartisan support, the endorsement of AAKP, the united kidney community, and the American Council of Life Insurance (ACLI).

In 2018, with bipartisan support from Congress and the Trump Administration, AAKP and transplant professionals worked with the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) legal team and the DOL Wage and Hour Division to have DOL extend Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protections for living organ donors, based on the original intent of the FMLA's Congressional co-sponsors (click here to read the letter and click here to watch the video). Congressional passage of the LDPA in 2026 will codify the DOL's 2018 FMLA job protections and prohibit insurers from discriminating against living donors.

The 2026 KidneyVoter™ campaign followed AAKP's bipartisan All Kidney Policy is Local™ national campaign, which connected patients, organ donors, and caregivers with U.S. Congressional leaders in their home district offices and online during the 2026 Congressional summer recess. Since 2025, the campaign has resulted in over 300 targeted legislative and policy meetings with top Congressional decision-makers. Both the KidneyVoter™ and the All Kidney Policy is Local™ campaigns are central elements of AAKP's Decade of the Kidney™ initiative, which supports kidney care innovation and implementation of the larger national kidney policy goals first outlined in the historic, bipartisan 2019 Executive Order on Advancing Kidney Health. AAKP provides advocacy skills and social media training for patients and organ donors through its Center for Patient Engagement and Advocacy and through its National Patient Meeting with a faculty of allied government affairs and political experts.

Follow AAKP on social media at @kidneypatient on Facebook, @kidneypatients on X, and @kidneypatients on Instagram, and visit http://www.aakp.org for more information. AAKP patient advocates advance bipartisan kidney policy including: passage of the bipartisan law modernizing the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) (2023); lifetime transplant drug coverage for kidney patients (2020); the historic Executive Order on Advancing American Kidney Health signed by President Donald Trump (2019); job protections for living organ donors under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) via the U.S. Department of Labor (2018); and Congressional approval of HIV positive organ transplants for HIV positive patients (2013).
