Qinghai-Xizang Railway Hits 824M Tonnes Freight in 20 Years

Xining, China – September 03, 2026 -- The Qinghai-Xizang Railway has moved 104 million passengers and more than 824 million tonnes of freight across its 1,956-kilometer route since opening 20 years ago, reshaping trade flows and industrial output on the Tibetan plateau.

XINING, China -- September 01, 2026 -- The Qinghai-Xizang Railway, a 1,956-kilometer line linking Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa in the Xizang autonomous region, has carried 104 million passenger trips and moved more than 824 million tonnes of cargo since opening. The Golmud-Lhasa section, which opened on July 1, 2006 at an average elevation of 4,440 meters, has now completed two decades of continuous operation.
