Huawei's Mate 90 Series Debuts New Tau Chip and $1,700 Flagship Price Tag

Shenzhen – – October 01, 2026 -- Huawei has launched its HUAWEI Mate 90 Series, with prices starting at CNY5,999 (roughly $840) for the base model and climbing to CNY12,999 (about $1,820) for the RS ULTIMATE DESIGN variant.

The flagship Tau chip powers the entire lineup for the first time.

The Mate 90 Pro Max runs on the new LogicFolding Tau Chip, which Huawei says enables 5 million signal transmission bonds and 125 TB/s of inter-die bandwidth. The Pro Max Premium Edition and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN use the Kirin 9050 Pro, delivering a 31% performance jump over prior chips, while the Pro model's Kirin 9035 adds a 20% boost and the standard edition's Kirin 9030 gains 27%.

Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, said the series marks "a comprehensive evolution in design, performance, imaging, reliability, and smart user experience" through tight integration of hardware, software, chips, and cloud.

A new glass coating makes the camera module 20 times more drop-resistant.

The Mate 90 Pro and higher models use a full-body Kunlun Xuanwu architecture, with the camera cover featuring the industry's first Optical Kunlun Glass. Huawei claims this delivers 20x better drop resistance, while a 3rd-generation Kunlun Glass front panel improves impact resistance by 50%. The entire series carries IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust, water, and high-pressure jet resistance.

The display hits 12,000 nits of peak brightness.

The second-generation Linglong Display on the Mate 90 Pro reaches that brightness level at 1% APL and extends panel lifespan by 138% through an enhanced Tandem OLED structure. The Pro Max and RS ULTIMATE DESIGN add a Full-color Linglong Display capable of upsampling content from over 60 apps to BT.2020 color quality.

The camera system adds a detachable modular lens.

All models include True-to-Color Camera 3.0, which Huawei says improves color accuracy by 37% and skin-tone accuracy by 62%. The Pro Max pairs an 18 EV ultra-HDR main camera with a 200 MP RYYB telephoto sensor. A separate XMAGE Z10 Modular Camera accessory adds a 1-inch sensor with 24–240mm optical zoom and an aperture range of f/2.0 to f/4.5.

HarmonyOS now runs on more than 90 million devices.

The Mate 90 series ships with HarmonyOS 7 and a 30B-parameter on-device AI model on Pro Max and higher variants, powering features like automated call summaries and real-time translation through Celia Call 2.0. Huawei said HarmonyOS 6 and 7 combined are on track to surpass 100 million active devices by year-end, with its developer community now exceeding 11 million registered members.

Between 2007 and the end of 2025, Huawei invested a cumulative CNY1.8 trillion in research and development.
