Burlington – September 23, 2026 -- RunVermont is redesigning the M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay course and adding a standalone half marathon option, with both changes debuting Sunday, May 30, 2027.
A half marathon joins the race lineup for the first time
Runners will be able to register for a new capped-field half marathon, giving solo participants a shorter distance option. The existing 3-5 Person and 2 Person Relays, presented by Darn Tough Vermont, will continue for those who prefer to tackle the full marathon as a team.
Amtrak crossings are gone, eliminating train delays
All at-grade Amtrak rail crossings have been removed from the route, ending the possibility of train-related stoppages affecting a runner's official finish time.
The confusing figure-eight layout is being straightened out
The previous two-loop, figure-eight course design is being untwisted to remove crossover points that caused congestion and confusion among runners.
The course keeps its fast, flat reputation
The net-zero elevation profile remains unchanged, though organizers are adding an optimized wave start to reduce crowding at the outset.
