PLANO, Texas – September 05, 2026 -- Ribbon Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: RBBN) has expanded its critical infrastructure portfolio with two new routers, the NPT 1022M and NPT 2104, targeting utilities that need to modernize operational networks without disrupting essential services.
New routers extend existing NPT platform lineup
The NPT 1022M and NPT 2104 build on Ribbon's existing NPT 1012D and NPT 2714 platforms. Combined with the company's IP rNOS routing software, optical networking portfolio and Muse multilayer automation platform, the additions are designed to support converged IT/OT communications networks across utility operations.
Portfolio targets teleprotection, SCADA and grid synchronization
Ribbon's solutions support teleprotection, SCADA, operational voice, deterministic packet transport via MPLS-TP and SR-TE, scalable IP/MPLS networking, and class D timing for frequency and time synchronization across the grid. The company states its technology spans hundreds of thousands of deployed network elements globally.
New capabilities include quantum-safe security and 400GbE interfaces
Key features include built-in quantum-safe security and MACsec encryption, IEC 61850 compliance, IEEE 1613 class B certification, and fully integrated IPoDWDM. The routers also support advanced circuit emulation for legacy 64 kbit/s PCM services alongside 100GbE and 400GbE interfaces, enabling utilities to run TDM-based legacy systems and modern IP-MPLS architectures on a shared infrastructure.
Executive cites need to bridge legacy and next-generation requirements
Sam Bucci, EVP and COO at Ribbon, said the expanded portfolio allows utilities to bridge legacy and next-generation requirements on a single, modern platform while transitioning from TDM to IP-MPLS and segment routing architectures.
The company positions the launch as addressing utility pressure to integrate distributed energy resources, improve grid reliability, and strengthen cybersecurity while supporting smart grid analytics, video monitoring and automation.
