Function Health Names Ex-Instagram, Uber, Spotify Exec Taj Alavi as First CMO

Austin – October 05, 2026 -- Function Health has appointed Taj Alavi as its first Chief Marketing Officer, tasking the former Instagram, Uber and Spotify executive with scaling consumer adoption of its preventive health testing platform.

Alavi brings three consumer-tech scale-up track records to a health startup

At Instagram, Alavi led global brand marketing and launched the Stories feature as the platform grew from 300 million to 1 billion users. She later ran global brand and creative at Uber before serving as Global Head of Marketing at Spotify, overseeing growth, product and marketing for a $13 billion business spanning music, podcasts and audiobooks. She most recently consulted for Neko Health, a European health-screening company.

Function closed a $450 million growth round this year

The CMO hire follows a run of expansion moves at Function Health in 2026: the company acquired at-home lab-draw service Getlabs and supplement platform SuppCo, entered a research partnership with NYU Grossman School of Medicine targeting asymptomatic disease detection, and secured $450 million in growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund.

Membership covers 160-plus lab tests for $365 a year

Function's core offering gives members biannual access to more than 160 lab tests -- spanning cardiac, hormone, thyroid, liver, kidney, heavy-metal, nutrient, inflammation and cancer-signal markers -- for $365 annually, or roughly $1 per day. Members can pay extra for MRI and CT scans designed to detect cancer, prior strokes, abdominal aneurysms, endometriosis and other conditions, with results integrated into a personalized digital interface.

CEO and co-founder Jonathan Swerdlin said health is a larger consumer category than music, ride-hailing and social media combined, framing Function's model as a direct data relationship between members and their own biology rather than a traditional clinical gatekeeper. Alavi said her goal is to make real-time biological insight and action part of everyday life for millions more consumers.
