AIRS Medical Wins FDA Clearance for 5-Minute MRI Body Composition Tool

Chicago – October 05, 2026 -- AIRS Medical has secured U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance for SwiftSight Body Composition, an AI-powered MRI analysis tool that quantifies muscle and fat tissue in under five minutes, with SimonMed Imaging confirmed as the first customer to deploy the system.

Scan time under five minutes targets high-volume imaging centers

SwiftSight Body Composition pairs a sub-five-minute MRI scan with automated AI segmentation to measure visceral and subcutaneous fat, abdominal and thigh muscle quantity and quality, bilateral muscle balance, and liver fat via proton density fat fraction. Results are benchmarked against age- and sex-matched reference populations and compiled into a standardized Body Composition Report combining measurements, percentile rankings and visual summaries.

AIRS Medical positions the tool as a revenue expansion play for existing MRI infrastructure

The company says imaging organizations can add the service without introducing a new modality or building manual analysis workflows, allowing deployment across multiple sites using existing MRI hardware. AIRS Medical frames this as an opportunity for health systems to extend whole-body, preventive, healthy-aging, weight-management and wellness programs into a new billable service line.

Jina Park, Chief Strategy Officer at AIRS Medical, said the sub-five-minute scan design supports repeat testing for users tracking body composition changes over time in preventive health, weight management or longevity contexts.

Core muscle groups and liver fat get automated quantitative assessment

The solution evaluates core muscles including the abdominal wall, psoas and paraspinal muscles, along with quadriceps, hamstrings and adductors, assessing proportion, quality and bilateral balance. Liver fat quantification uses automated region-of-interest measurements and visual mapping via PDFF, an alternative to weight or BMI metrics that cannot capture fat and muscle distribution.

Platform roadmap adds diffusion tensor imaging in November 2026

AIRS Medical plans to expand its SwiftSight quantitative MRI portfolio with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) capabilities in November 2026, followed by quantitative joint applications in 2027. The company's broader MRI Intelligence Platform also includes SwiftMR, its AI-powered MRI reconstruction and workflow technology, with the body composition clearance marking its first expansion beyond brain imaging applications.

Because MRI avoids ionizing radiation, AIRS Medical notes the technology supports longitudinal tracking of body composition changes without repeated radiation exposure, a factor relevant for multi-site organizations seeking standardized quantitative benchmarking across locations.
