Lithium Compound Market to Hit $39.74B by 2034 on EV, Battery Demand

Pune – October 05, 2026 -- The global lithium compound market is projected to grow from $9.82 billion in 2025 to $39.74 billion by 2034, a 16.8% compound annual growth rate, according to new analysis from Maximize Market Research.

Battery demand drives roughly 80% of global lithium consumption

Global lithium production reached approximately 130,000 tons in 2025 against consumption of around 134,000 tons, underscoring tight supply-demand balance. Lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide dominate battery-grade applications, while lithium chloride, lithium bromide, lithium metal and butyllithium serve glass, ceramics, lubricants, metallurgy, air treatment and pharmaceutical markets. Stationary battery storage demand is growing at an estimated 40% annually, adding a new layer of consumption beyond electric vehicle batteries.

Eramet commits $350 million to expand Argentina lithium output

Eramet announced in 2026 plans to invest approximately $350 million to add 11,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate equivalent capacity in Argentina. SQM and Codelco advanced a $3 billion Atacama lithium project in Chile, while EnergyX secured $225 million from Eni for its Black Giant project, targeting 52,500 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate production capacity across its first two phases. TerraLithium and BHE Renewables separately demonstrated production of lithium chloride, battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide from geothermal brines.

CATL restarts Jianxiawo mine, adding 46,000 tonnes of capacity in China

CATL received a safety production permit in July 2026 to restart its Jianxiawo lithium mine in Yichun, China, following a prolonged suspension. The mine carries an estimated capacity equivalent to 46,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year, strengthening domestic raw material availability for China's battery and electric vehicle manufacturing base and reducing reliance on imported lithium.

Asia Pacific retains leadership as China, Japan, South Korea scale battery output

Asia Pacific remains the largest regional market, anchored by China's electric vehicle and battery manufacturing scale alongside industrial demand in Japan, South Korea and India. Australia continues to supply a significant share of battery-grade lithium resources globally. North America and Europe are expanding domestic extraction, processing and recycling capacity, while South America's resource base in Argentina and Chile draws new investment in lithium carbonate and hydroxide production.

Competitive landscape shifts toward integrated supply chains

Albemarle, SQM, Ganfeng Lithium, Tianqi Lithium, Lithium Americas, Pilbara Minerals, Mineral Resources, Rio Tinto, Eramet and Livent remain central to lithium mining, refining and chemical production. EnergyX, Vulcan Energy Resources, Standard Lithium, Neometals and Lilac Solutions are advancing direct lithium extraction and recycling technologies to secure higher-value positions in battery-grade compound supply.
