Rome – October 05, 2026 -- Temu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Italy's Central Inspectorate for Fraud Repression and Quality Protection of Agri-Food Products (ICQRF) to strengthen protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) on its online marketplace.
Agreement targets prevention and seller guidance on GI products
The MoU, signed alongside an event marking ICQRF's 40th anniversary, establishes a cooperation framework focused on prevention, seller education and information exchange. Temu and ICQRF will meet periodically to evaluate and develop joint initiatives aimed at strengthening GI protection and preventing unfair commercial practices.
ICQRF oversees Italy's agri-food and wine quality controls
ICQRF operates under Italy's Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF) and serves as the national authority responsible for official controls on agri-food and wine products, with specific responsibility for GIs. The body is also part of the European network of competent national and EU authorities involved in GI protection.
Deal creates dedicated points of contact for regulatory coordination
The agreement sets up an ongoing framework for cooperation and information exchange, including dedicated points of contact to facilitate regulatory clarification, address practical issues and coordinate monitoring of activities under the MoU.
"The agreement with Temu represents another key milestone in ICQRF's strategy to protect Geographical Indications in international digital markets," said Dr. Felice Assenza, Head of Department at ICQRF, adding that structured cooperation with leading online marketplaces is essential to combat online infringements.
Temu expands Brand Registry with dedicated GI category
Temu has introduced a dedicated GI category within its global Brand Registry, giving rights holders worldwide tools to register GI rights by submitting registration details and supporting documentation for review. Once approved, rights holders and authorised agents can report potentially infringing listings directly through Temu's Brand Protection Center.
Temu said intellectual property protection remains a core pillar of its platform governance, supported by policies and measures designed to protect rights holders.
