S&P Global Launches Vault Risk Assessment for $10B DeFi Lending Market

Singapore – – October 04, 2026 -- S&P Global Ratings has launched a new risk-assessment framework for digital asset lending vaults, a market that has grown to $10 billion in deposits as of September 2026 from $1.5 billion two years earlier. The Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) delivers independent, forward-looking analysis of impairment risk for investors in blockchain-based lending vehicles that pool deposits and deploy them according to defined strategies, functioning much like traditional fixed income funds.

Vaults pool $10 billion despite thin disclosure standards

Digital asset lending vaults allow depositors to receive share tokens representing proportional claims on pooled assets and returns, with strategies executed either through automated smart contracts or discretionary human managers. S&P Global Ratings notes that while blockchain activity offers point-in-time transparency on transactions, strategy and risk disclosures across vaults have remained limited, creating a gap for institutional investors evaluating exposure.

VRA framework scores six distinct risk categories

The VRA is not a credit rating and does not address yield levels. Instead, it evaluates a vault's overall risk profile using a letter-based scale across six factors: portfolio credit quality risk, liquidity mismatch risk, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk. S&P Global Ratings said it will publish initial assessments in future announcements.

Executives frame launch as bridge between TradFi and DeFi

"As digital assets continue to institutionalize, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralized innovation is paramount," said Yann Le Pallec, President, S&P Global Ratings. James Wiemken, Executive Managing Director and Head of Global Ratings Services, said varying disclosure standards in the nascent vault market created "a clear need for a standardized, independent risk perspective."

Launch follows string of digital-asset rating milestones

The VRA adds to a series of recent moves by S&P Global into digital assets, including the industry's first Stablecoin Stability Assessments, the first credit rating of a DeFi protocol (Sky Protocol), and the firm's first rating of a bitcoin-backed structured finance transaction, Ledn. S&P DJI and Kaiko have also tokenized the iBoxx U.S. Treasuries Index on blockchain.

OpenZeppelin acquisition and Kaiko investment signal deeper DeFi push

In September 2026, S&P Global announced an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin, described as the security standard for onchain finance. Earlier that month, S&P Global led a strategic investment in Kaiko, an independent provider of digital asset market data, indices and data infrastructure.
