National Grid completes electricity tunnel breakthrough 49 days ahead of schedule

- Tunnel boring machine Caroline has completed her 2.2km drive beneath the River Thames, marking the end of tunnelling on National Grid’s Grain to Tilbury project

- Breakthrough was achieved 49 days ahead schedule, following exceptional tunnelling performance

- The milestone supports National Grid's work to strengthen the electricity network and connect cleaner, home-grown energy to homes and businesses

National Grid has reached a major milestone on its Grain to Tilbury project, part of The Great Grid Upgrade, after tunnel boring machine (TBM) Caroline successfully completed her breakthrough under the River Thames on Sunday 27 September after excavating a new 2.2km high-voltage electricity cable tunnel between Tilbury in Essex and Gravesend in Kent.

Caroline completed the final stage of her journey underwater, with the reception shaft intentionally flooded to balance pressure between the shaft and surrounding chalk ground and reduce the risk of groundwater entering the shaft during the final stage of tunnelling.

With more than 10,000 concrete tunnel segments installed to create the tunnel lining, and nearly 1,700 tunnel rings constructed, the breakthrough marks the completion of the project's tunnelling phase. The milestone was achieved 49 days ahead of the original programme following an exceptional tunnelling performance by teams working on the 2.2km drive beneath the River Thames.

The achievement was supported by close collaboration between National Grid, delivery partner Ferrovial BEMO JV, design partner Mott MacDonald and tunnelling specialist Herrenknecht. Careful planning, favourable ground conditions, and the proven performance of the tunnel boring machine all contributed to the early breakthrough, alongside well-coordinated logistics that kept tunnel segments continuously delivered to the TBM, while a dedicated separation plant reliably processed excavated material uninterrupted and efficiently.

Combined with the expertise of engineers, operators and construction teams, Caroline maintained strong progress throughout the tunnelling phase. In the most productive month, she advanced 926 metres and installed 712 tunnel lining rings. At peak performance, the machine advanced 229 metres in a single week, while its best daily output saw 41 metres excavated and 31 tunnel rings installed in just 24 hours.

Digital design tools and connected TBM data also supported delivery by improving visibility, quality assurance and decision-making. An integrated underwater telescopic camera allowed inspections to be carried out remotely, reducing the need for personnel intervention and supporting safe working practices.

Mark Farmer, Project Director, National Grid, said:

"The breakthrough of TBM Caroline is a fantastic achievement and a major milestone for the Grain to Tilbury project."

"Completing this tunnel drive ahead of schedule is a testament to the expertise, dedication and collaboration of our teams and supply chain partners. Everyone involved has worked together to deliver an exceptional performance safely and efficiently, helping us reach this important milestone sooner than anticipated."

"This project will play a critical role in strengthening the electricity network and supporting Britain's future energy needs as demand for cleaner electricity continues to grow."

Borja Trashorras, Project Director, Ferrovial BEMO JV, said:

“Reaching breakthrough ahead of schedule is the result of excellent planning, strong engineering expertise and outstanding collaboration across the project team.”

“The combination of diligent planning, efficient logistics, innovative tunnelling technology and a highly skilled workforce enabled us to achieve consistently strong performance throughout the drive. We are extremely proud of this achievement and of everyone who contributed to making it possible.”

Ulrich Schaffhauser, Member of the Board, Herrenknecht AG, said:

“The fast completion of the cable tunnel beneath the River Thames shows the value of effectively coordinating all project components, technologies, and services. With our product and service portfolio, we were able to deliver not only the TBM tailored to the operating conditions, but also the corresponding separation equipment and tunnel logistics for continuous tunnelling performance.”

"This breakthrough demonstrates what can be achieved when advanced tunnelling technology, efficient project execution and strong teamwork come together. We congratulate the entire project team on reaching the breakthrough safely and successfully."

The shaft at Gravesend was intentionally flooded before breakthrough. Due to the local chalk ground conditions, the shaft had to be flooded, creating a balanced hydrostatic pressure between the shaft and the surrounding ground. This significantly reduced the risk of groundwater flowing into the shaft as the machine broke through.

Following the breakthrough, activities will continue to allow TBM Caroline to advance beyond the shaft wall and reach its final position, enabling the remaining ring-segment construction works to be completed.

Dewatering of the shaft started in September and will continue through October. Once complete, the TBM will be lifted, before being disassembled as the project progresses into its next phase of construction.

Live working moves a step closer after National Grid secures innovation funding

Four National Grid projects have secured more than £5 million through the next stage of Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) programme, including a project that could reintroduce live working on the UK transmission network for the first time in a generation – supporting faster delivery and reducing system costs.

The projects span both the Discovery and Beta phases of the SIF programme, which supports the development and testing of new technologies and approaches to help transform Great Britain’s energy networks.

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) has been awarded £4,947,031 for the DEsign for Live Line Technology Acceleration (DELLTA) three-year Beta phase project.

Maintenance on transmission assets is typically carried out during planned outages, when circuits are taken out of service, which can be costly and difficult to schedule. By enabling maintenance on live assets, DELLTA could reduce outages, maintain network capacity and help accelerate vital grid reinforcement.

It follows a successful Alpha phase and will see the project continue to develop techniques that could enable maintenance to be safely carried out on high-voltage transmission networks while they remain energised.

DELLTA is being led by National Grid Electricity Transmission in partnership with Frazer-Nash Consultancy, The University of Manchester, Allied Insulators, The University of Liverpool and SSEN Transmission as well as the Budapest University of Technology and Economics to learn global best practice.

During its Alpha phase, the project successfully demonstrated a proposed live insulator replacement method on a de-energised network. The new funding will support a three-year Beta phase which will further develop the advanced equipment, procedures and training required for live working.

The project's main focus will be the live replacement of overhead line insulators, but will also explore other potential live working uses. It will see a team being trained in carrying out live working, with the project culminating in a demonstration of techniques and technologies on NGET’s network.

The overall ambition of the DELLTA project is for live working to be a business-as-usual tool for the transmission network.

NGET is also a partner on the Quantum optimisation for future gas network design project, which is being led by National Gas and has been awarded £616,558 of SIF Alpha phase funding.

The project will look to develop a quantum computing inspired optimisation approach to improve outage planning in gas transmission, but also has the potential to be applied across electricity networks, supporting whole-system planning and improving efficiency.

Neil McClymont, Head of Innovation at National Grid Electricity Transmission, said:

“As demand for electricity grows, innovation is essential in helping us futureproof the network. These projects will help us explore new technologies, techniques and approaches that can support a more flexible and resilient network.

“The DELLTA project is particularly exciting as it has the potential to transform how we work by developing the equipment and techniques needed to safely carry out maintenance on the transmission network while assets remain in service, reducing the need for planned outages and minimising associated costs.”

The projects are funded through the Strategic Innovation Fund, an Ofgem programme managed in partnership with Innovate UK.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has been awarded almost £550,000 for three projects.

DISPATCH, which stands for Data-Integrated Systems for Power Transmission and Community Heat, will investigate how the siting of data centres could have spin-off benefits. It will examine if medium-size centres can provide low-temperature waste heat to benefit households with extra needs, and look at the potential of sharing flexibility service income with heat networks.

SOS Racer (Security of Supply - Revised Approach to Consider Embedded Resources) will assess how battery storage, solar and wind farms could provide additional assurance that the electricity system can be secure at times of peak demand. It will examine how distributed demand-side flexibility can also inform future resilience, planning and market frameworks.

The third NGED funding award is for the Innovation Delivery Group (IDG) charter discovery project looking at decentralised system balancing.

The IDG, which is chaired by National Grid Electricity Distribution’s DSO managing director Cathy McClay, with Rebecca Beresford of the National Energy System Operator (NESO) as vice chair, will set out clear delivery pathways and identify gaps in the products, services and capabilities needed for decentralised system balancing. These findings will help inform decisions on which future innovation projects could best address those gaps.

Emily Spearman, Director of Innovation at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said:

“These projects highlight how innovation can help tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the future energy system, from strengthening security of supply and enabling decentralised system balancing to creating wider benefits for customers and communities.

“By working with partners across the sector, we can turn new ideas into practical solutions that support a more resilient, flexible and affordable electricity network.”

Rihanna's Golden Dragon Gown has arrived: Guo Pei's Garden of Ethereal Realms Exhibition Opens at China National Silk Museum

HANGZHOU, China, Oct. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Garden of Ethereal Realms: Guo Pei Costume Art Exhibition" opened on September 27, 2026, at the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou. As a leading figure in Chinese contemporary haute couture, Guo Pei has spent four decades exploring the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern costume design. This exhibition is a personal retrospective that traces the evolution of her creative career.

Drawing from 40 years of work, the exhibition features approximately 200 haute couture pieces, organized into four sections and nine representative series. It systematically presents Guo Pei's long-term exploration of garment structure, traditional techniques, material language, and East-West aesthetics. Works on display include One Thousand and Two Nights, Legend, Samsara, Paradise Island, and Children's Dream, among others. Notably, the exhibition also showcases the golden embroidered dragon robe worn by global pop icon Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala, red-carpet gowns for celebrated stars such as Liu Shishi and Dilraba, as well as costumes created for national stages including the Beijing Olympics and CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

The four sections—"Time, Fable, Rebirth," "Building Dreams, Legend," "Dream Isle Garden," and "Eastern Palace Echoes"—offer a comprehensive view of her artistic journey. A folded-paper installation is also featured, reinterpreting the contours, layers, and power of haute couture through structural language.

As a specialized museum dedicated to silk, textiles, and costume culture, the China National Silk Museum places haute couture within the context of silk history and dress culture. The exhibition invites the public to rediscover the contemporary value of traditional materials and craftsmanship, and to appreciate the time, skill, and creativity behind each haute couture piece.

Purina and Mariska Hargitay Bring the Purple Leash Project to U.S. Soccer, Launch Limited-Edition Scarves Supporting Abuse Survivors and Pets

Hargitay joined the U.S. Women's National Team as Purina's Honorary Captain to raise awareness and support for domestic violence survivors with pets during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Purina, the Official Pet Care Partner of the U.S. Soccer Federation, brought its Purple Leash Project message and mission to the pitch during the U.S. Women's National Team match against Spain, presented by Purina, at Audi Field. Actress, producer and advocate Mariska Hargitay joined the pet care leader at the match to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence, show support for survivors and inspire soccer fans to learn more about the Purple Leash Project and ways they can help survivors and their pets find safety together.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Mariska Hargitay, a longtime Purina partner and dedicated champion for domestic violence survivors, joined Purina and the USWNT as Purina's Honorary Captain. Hargitay participated in the pre-match coin toss alongside Cassidy, a 75-pound Golden Retriever, and her handler, Patrice "Pat" Eller. Together, Cassidy and Pat are part of a Pet Partners pet therapy support team that provides comfort and reassurance to children who may be called to testify in court, helping create a greater sense of safety for children and families during difficult moments. Their work reflects the Purple Leash Project's focus on the healing power of comfort, connection and support for people and pets impacted by domestic violence.

The Purple Leash Project, a Purina initiative in partnership with nonprofit RedRover, helps domestic violence survivors and their pets escape abuse and heal together by making more shelters pet-friendly. Through grants to domestic violence shelters and social service providers, the initiative supports pet-friendly shelter renovations, on-site and off-site pet housing solutions, the purchase of essential pet supplies and the cost of necessary veterinary care, helping remove barriers to safety for survivors who might otherwise have to leave a beloved pet behind. Today, only 20% of domestic violence shelters allow pets, and 48% of survivors delay leaving an abusive situation because they cannot take their pets with them.

"Seeing the Purple Leash Project take the field helped turn the stadium into a powerful show of support for survivors and the pets they love," said Mariska Hargitay. "I'm honored to continue my work with Purina on a stage like this during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to bring greater awareness to domestic abuse, help break down the stigma survivors so often face and shine a light on the need for more safe, pet-friendly spaces where survivors and their beloved, trusted companions can begin healing together."

Bringing awareness to this important cause is a key way Purina works to support survivors, helping to erase the stigma many survivors encounter. Soccer fans can show their support for survivors and the Purple Leash Project by purchasing a limited-edition, Courageous & Comfy Soccer Scarf, officially licensed by U.S. Soccer and available exclusively at shop.PurpleLeashProject.com. One hundred percent of every purchase is a donation to RedRover to support the Purple Leash Project mission to help keep abuse survivors together with their pets.

"At Purina, we believe survivor safety shouldn't require sacrifice. That's why we're proud to continue our work with RedRover and grateful to Mariska for helping to bring greater visibility to the need for more safe spaces for domestic violence survivors on both ends of the leash," said Nina Leigh Krueger, CEO of Purina. "Together, we can help ensure survivors never have to choose between their safety and the safety of pets they love."

In addition to putting a spotlight on the Purple Leash Project, this game also reflected Purina's broader approach to sports collaborations, reimagining the role pets can play in sports culture, not only as companions at home, but as part of the fan experience itself. At Audi Field, Purina created the Purina Club, a temporary pet-friendly seating area where soccer fans can bring their dogs to cheer on the U.S. Women's National Team together. And, earlier this year, Purina launched its national "For the Team Behind the Team" campaign with U.S. Men's National Team player Weston McKennie and introduced the first national pet jersey for soccer fans and their pets. Purina also partnered with KC2026 on pet-centered programming at the FIFA Fan Festival Kansas City, including Dog Days, pet kits and adoption-focused community programming.

Through the Purple Leash Project, Purina has provided nearly 70 grants for more than $2.2 million across more than 30 states to help create pet-friendly spaces for domestic violence survivors and their pets. Purina is working toward an ambitious goal of helping to provide 1 million safe nights for survivors and their pets by the end of 2030.

Q: Why did Purina partner with the U.S. Women's National Team and Mariska Hargitay?

A: During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Purina saw an opportunity to bring together two of its partners, the U.S. Soccer Federation and actress, producer and advocate Mariska Hargitay, to shine a light on the Purple Leash Project's efforts to support survivors with pets. The partnership aims to raise awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence, help reduce survivor stigma and highlight the importance of creating safe, pet-friendly spaces where survivors and their pets can escape abuse and heal together.

Q: What are the "Courageous Together" soccer scarves?

A: The "Courageous & Comfy" soccer scarves are limited-edition scarves created by Purina in partnership with U.S. Soccer to raise awareness for domestic violence survivors and their pets. They are available at shop.PurpleLeashProject.com, and 100% of every purchase is a donation to RedRover to help keep abuse survivors and their pets together.

Q: How can fans support the Purple Leash Project?

A: Fans can purchase a limited-edition "Courageous Together" soccer scarf at shop.PurpleLeashProject.com. One hundred percent of every purchase is donated to RedRover to support domestic violence survivors and their pets. Fans can also learn more about Purina's work through the Purple Leash Project at Purina.com/EscapeTogether.

Q: How is Purina expanding the role of pets in sports?

A: Purina is helping make pets part of the sports fan experience. Earlier this year, Purina launched the "For the Team Behind the Team" campaign with U.S. Men's National Team player Weston McKennie and introduced what it describes as the first national pet jersey for soccer fans and their pets. Purina also partnered with KC2026 on pet-centered programming at the FIFA Fan FestivalTM Kansas City, including Dog Days, pet kits and adoption-focused community programming.

Celltrion to Present New Analyses of ZYMFENTRA® (infliximab-dyyb) in Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis at ACG 2026
Image File
Original HTML

- New data show favorable outcomes with subcutaneous infliximab following intravenous infliximab interruption, regardless of prior antibody status, in adult patients with moderate to severely active Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis

- Late-breaking analysis shows significantly higher rates of clinical remission and improved endoscopic outcomes with subcutaneous versus intravenous infliximab in patients with ileum-dominant Crohn's disease

JERSEY CITY, N.J., Oct. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Celltrion USA, Inc. today announced that two analyses evaluating ZYMFENTRA® (infliximab-dyyb) will be presented in oral presentations on Oct. 13 and 14 at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. The data include a late-breaking pooled and propensity score-matched analysis comparing subcutaneous (SC) and intravenous (IV) infliximab in patients with ileum-dominant Crohn's disease, as well as a post hoc analysis from the Phase 3 LIBERTY-CD and LIBERTY-UC studies assessing the impact of prior anti-drug antibody (ADA) status on clinical outcomes following SC infliximab 240 mg initiation after interruption of IV infliximab treatment.[1,2]

"People living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can have varied disease characteristics, presentations, and treatment histories that may shape a unique care pathway, and clinicians need evidence that reflects the range of patients they see," said Dr. Juby Jacob-Nara, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Celltrion USA. "We're pleased to share new analyses at ACG that provide additional information about subcutaneous infliximab in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and reflect Celltrion's commitment to advancing clinically meaningful research for the IBD community."

Presentation Details

Both analyses will be presented by Marla Dubinsky, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the IBD Center at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York.

Post Hoc Analysis of LIBERTY-CD and -UC Studies Following an IV Infliximab Treatment Interruption

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 2:45-2:55 p.m. CT

Room: Karl F. Dean Grand Ballroom A, Level 4

Abstract Title: "Impact of Prior Anti-drug Antibody Status on Clinical Outcomes Following Subcutaneous Infliximab Initiation After Intravenous Infliximab Interruption: A Post Hoc Analysis of LIBERTY-CD and -UC Studies"

Session: Plenary Session 3A: IBD

Presentation: 40

A separate post hoc analysis evaluated efficacy, serum infliximab concentrations, and immunogenicity among patients from the placebo arms of the Phase 3 LIBERTY-CD and LIBERTY-UC studies who initiated SC infliximab 240 mg every two weeks following an interruption in IV infliximab treatment. Patients were assessed according to whether anti-drug antibodies (ADAs) had been detected before they began SC infliximab.[2]

Among patients who initiated SC infliximab 240 mg, 72.5% (37 of 51) of patients with Crohn's disease and 92.2% (71 of 77) of patients with ulcerative colitis had prior ADA positivity. The median interval between the last IV infliximab infusion and initiation of SC infliximab was 16 weeks in ADA-positive and ADA-negative patients in both the Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis groups.[2]

Across Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis populations, the analysis found clinical outcomes were generally similar regardless of whether patients had ADAs before starting SC infliximab, with clinical response in Crohn's disease and partial clinical response in ulcerative colitis observed by 8±2 weeks and sustained through 78 to 80 weeks. Serum infliximab concentrations increased after initiation of SC infliximab and were generally comparable over time across ADA-status groups. Levels of fecal calprotectin and C-reactive protein decreased at the first assessment after treatment began and remained lower through the final assessment. ADA positivity declined among patients with pre-existing ADAs, while new ADA development was uncommon in patients without prior ADAs.

"Anti-drug antibodies to intravenous infliximab can compromise infliximab reinitiation after treatment interruption. Data on subcutaneous infliximab initiation after a drug holiday are limited, particularly regarding the impact of prior ADA status on clinical outcomes," said Marla Dubinsky, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the IBD Center at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York. "These post hoc findings suggest that prior ADA status did not appear to compromise clinical outcomes after initiating subcutaneous infliximab following drug holiday after intravenous infliximab induction."

Late-Breaking Data in Ileum-Dominant Crohn's Disease

Date: Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 9:30-9:40 a.m. CT.

Late-Breaking Abstract Title: "Comparative Efficacy of Subcutaneous Versus Intravenous Infliximab in Ileum-Dominant Crohn's Disease: A Pooled Analysis and Propensity Score-Matched Analysis of Infliximab Registrational Studies"

Session: Plenary Session 4B: Liver, Esophagus, CRC, IBD

Presentation: 72

The late-breaking abstract reports a pooled analysis of individual patient data from four infliximab registrational studies. The analysis included patients with ileal or ileocolonic Crohn's disease who received standard maintenance treatment with SC infliximab 120 mg every two weeks or IV infliximab 5 mg/kg every eight weeks. Of 884 patients across the studies, 200 met the eligibility criteria; a 1:1 propensity score-matched analysis included 70 patients in each treatment group.[1]

In the matched population at Week 54, patients receiving SC infliximab had higher rates of clinical remission, endoscopic response, and endoscopic remission than those receiving IV infliximab:[1]

- Clinical remission: 71.4% vs. 51.4% (P = 0.023)

- Endoscopic response: 65.7% vs. 27.1% (P 0.001)

- Endoscopic remission: 41.4% vs. 17.1% (P = 0.003)

The analysis also found that, in both treatment groups, endoscopic responders had significantly higher serum infliximab concentrations than nonresponders.

About ZYMFENTRA® (infliximab-dyyb; subcutaneous infliximab)

ZYMFENTRA® (infliximab-dyyb) is a prescription medicine used as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection) by adults for the maintenance treatment of moderately-to-severely active ulcerative colitis following treatment with an infliximab product given by intravenous infusion (IV), Moderately-to-severely active Crohn's disease following treatment with an infliximab product given by intravenous infusion (IV). ZYMFENTRA blocks the action of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a protein that can be overproduced in response to certain diseases and cause the immune system to attack normal, healthy parts of the body.

ZYMFENTRA was approved by the FDA through the Biologics License Application (BLA) under the 351 (a) pathway of the Public Health Service Act (a "stand-alone" BLA). ZYMFENTRA is considered a new biologic with a first-approved subcutaneous administration form and thus will be under patent protection for its dosage form by 2037 and for its route of administration by 2040.

Indication and Important Safety Information

ZYMFENTRA® is a prescription medicine indicated in adults for maintenance treatment of:

Moderately-to-severely active Crohn's disease following treatment with an infliximab product administered intravenously.

Moderately-to-severely active ulcerative colitis following treatment with an infliximab product administered intravenously.

It is not known if ZYMFENTRA is safe and effective in children under 18 years of age.

What is the most important information I should know about ZYMFENTRA?

SERIOUS INFECTIONS

Patients treated with ZYMFENTRA are at increased risk for developing serious infections involving various organ systems and sites that may lead to hospitalization or death. Discontinue ZYMFENTRA if a patient develops a serious infection or sepsis.

Reported infections include:

- Active tuberculosis (TB), including reactivation of latent TB. Patients frequently presented with disseminated or extrapulmonary disease. Patients should be tested for latent TB before and during treatment with ZYMFENTRA. Treatment for latent infection should be initiated prior to treatment with ZYMFENTRA.

- Invasive fungal infections, including histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis, blastomycosis, and pneumocystosis. Patients may present with disseminated, rather than localized, disease. Empiric anti-fungal therapy should be considered in patients at risk for invasive fungal infections who develop severe systemic illness.

- Bacterial, viral, and other infections due to opportunistic pathogens, including Legionella and Listeria.

The risks and benefits of treatment with ZYMFENTRA should be carefully considered prior to initiating therapy in patients with chronic or recurrent infection. Closely monitor patients for the development of signs and symptoms of infection during and after treatment with ZYMFENTRA, including the possible development of TB in patients who tested negative for latent TB infection prior to initiating therapy.

Risk of infection may be higher in patients greater than 65 years of age, patients with comorbid conditions and/or patients taking concomitant immunosuppressant therapy. In clinical trials, other serious infections observed in patients treated with infliximab included arthritis bacterial, pneumonia, and urinary tract infection.

MALIGNANCIES

Malignancies, some fatal, have been reported in children, adolescents, and young adults treated with TNF blockers, including infliximab products.

Approximately half of these cases were lymphomas, including Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The other cases represented a variety of malignancies, including rare malignancies that are usually associated with immunosuppression and malignancies that are not usually observed in children and adolescents. The malignancies occurred after a median of 30 months after the first dose of therapy.
