Beyond e-Booking: The Next Chapter of Air Freight Intelligence
Image File
Original HTML

Sebastien leads commercial operations across the Americas and oversees Freightos’ global airline portfolio. With over a decade of executive aviation and air cargo experience, including leadership roles at Air Canada Cargo across revenue management, strategic alliances, and digital transformation, Sebastien brings deep operational and commercial perspective to modern freight digitization.

Executive Abstract & Discussion Overview

In this edition of Freight Thoughts, Judah Levine sits down with Sebastien Podgorski to explore the structural shifts happening across air cargo procurement.

While the last decade focused on digitizing search, dynamic rates, and e-bookings, the next industry frontier is about procurement intelligence. Across this three-part video series, Sebastien breaks down:

Why Peak Season Exposes Your Freight Procurement Vulnerabilities

- Peak Season Exposes Flaws

Peak demand does not create procurement problems. It exposes existing operational friction that teams ignore during stable periods.

- The Static vs. Dynamic Paradox

Air freight operates in a highly dynamic market, yet many forwarders still manage procurement using static spreadsheets, manual rate checks, and siloed communication.

- Contract vs. Spot Execution

The challenge isn’t choosing between long-term allocations or spot rates; it’s having the real-time data needed to know precisely when to utilize each.

- Data Context over Human Stitching

Highly skilled logistics professionals currently spend excessive time manually connecting fragmented data sources instead of focusing on commercial strategy.

Red Sea container traffic set for full return in Q1 – October 20, 2026 Update

Weekly highlights

Ocean rates – Freightos Baltic Index

- Asia-US West Coast prices (FBX01 Weekly) were level

- Asia-US East Coast prices (FBX03 Weekly) increased 1%

- Asia-N. Europe prices (FBX11 Weekly) increased 6%

- Asia-Mediterranean prices (FBX13 Weekly) increased 3%

Air rates – Freightos Air Index

- China – N. America weekly prices increased 19%

- China – N. Europe weekly prices increased 8%

- N. Europe – N. America weekly prices increased 2%

Analysis

Trends in international ocean logistics seem even more confusing than usual lately: more Iranian attacks but more Hormuz traffic; more crude exports but oil prices still around $100 per barrel; more risk of Houthi attacks on passing ships, but more container vessels returning to the Red Sea anyway.

Iran has stepped up the frequency of attacks on vessels around the Strait of Hormuz, partially because transits and crude flows through the waterway have increased in recent weeks. Last week an Iranian projectile sunk a Dubai-linked container vessel, indicating that even some container ships are taking the risk of transiting the strait, though most traffic still comprises tankers.

Despite some estimates that the increase in tankers exiting the Persian Gulf is contributing to Middle East crude exports approaching pre-war levels, crude prices – still pricing in elevated risk – remain high.

Houthi-Saudi violence is intensifying, with recent Houthi advances along the Red Sea increasing its potential leverage over maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the likelihood of attacks on passing vessels.

Despite that heightened risk – which since late 2023 had been enough to divert the vast majority of container traffic away from the Red Sea – container carriers continue their steady march back through the Suez, with estimates that transits will fully recover during Q1 of the coming year.

Why carriers are more comfortable going back now than during similar, earlier high-risk stretches is a good question. The answer is probably a mix of high current fuel costs and congestion levels with evolving geopolitical considerations. These considerations may include, as Peter Tirschwell recently pointed out, Houthi interest in security and stability for most Red Sea traffic that could somewhat legitimize the group in relation to the West – alongside increased pressure directed at Saudi Arabia and its passing vessels.

Whatever the reasons, that the Red Sea container rebound is happening gradually instead of all at once should mitigate the extent of schedule disruptions and vessel bunching that will occur as more vessels arrive earlier than slotted. That this restoration unfolded post the early-July Asia – Europe demand peak, and will continue through the coming low demand months will also mean less disruption to shippers than if the return coincided with peak season.

Current port congestion levels – though backlogs and delays are finally easing at Far East hubs – continues to absorb some container capacity, and will help carriers maintain rate levels even as effective capacity increases from vessels circulating more quickly via the Red Sea. Overall though, the Red Sea return – if geopolitics allow its completion – increases the overcapacity risk for carriers in 2027.

At the moment, even with Red Sea-driven effective capacity increases and slumping demand on Asia – Europe trades, spot rates are recently trending up on these lanes after months of declines.

Asia – N. Europe Freightos Baltic Index rates climbed 6% last week to $3,442/FEU and prices to the Mediterranean increased 3% to $3,927/FEU on recent GRIs aimed at putting pressure on rates as 2027 long term contract negotiations get underway. Some forwarders are skeptical however, that increases will stick given current market conditions.

Transpacific ocean rates were stable but still highly elevated last week at $8,126/FEU to the West Coast, with prices up 1% to $9,700/FEU for the East Coast. Daily rates so far this week are showing signs of increase – despite expectations that volumes are finally cooling – possibly due to capacity reductions as the lanes enter slow season.

Last month some carriers announced plans for significant transatlantic container price increases in October. So far though transatlantic spot rates have increased only about $200/FEU to $2,850/FEU since the end of September. Prices are however 25% higher than a year ago, possibly reflecting upward pressure from elevated bunker costs.

In air cargo, the EU is set to introduce a November 1st €2 small parcel handling fee on top of the €3 customs surcharge introduced in July for low value imports that previously entered via the de minimis exemption. This additional fee could increase the China – Europe e-commerce volume draw down seen since July, which has led to some downward pressure on air cargo rates and shifted freighter capacity to other lanes.

Freightos Air Index data show ex-China rates increased last week, possibly on a post-Golden Week backlog rebound or signalling the start of peak season pressure. Prices posted a sharp 19% gain to $6.88/kg to the US and an 8% climb to $3.87/kg to Europe.

But while the global benchmark is 30% higher than a year ago on elevated fuel costs and volume growth – with transpacific rates 25% higher year on year – Asia – Europe prices are down 3% compared to last October, possibly reflecting e-commerce volume adjustments on this lane.

Getinge Interim Report July-September 2026: Increased profitability, strong cash flow and higher customer satisfaction

Getinge Interim Report July-September 2026: Increased profitability, strong cash flow and higher customer satisfaction

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- "We delivered organic growth both in order intake and in sales during the quarter, at the same time we increased profitability and generated strong cash flow." says Mattias Perjos, President & CEO of Getinge.

Sales growth was primarily driven by Acute Care Therapies while Surgical Workflows contributed with a stable order intake, mainly within operating room equipment.

The situation for Life Science remains mixed – the high-margin Sterile Transfer category performed strongly, while the project-based and capital-intensive product category of WIS, which includes washer-disinfectors, was impacted by the persistently low level of investment activity in the pharma segment," says Mattias Perjos, President & CEO of Getinge.

The adjusted EBITA margin strengthened sharply, rising to 15.1%, and was positively impacted by tariff refunds of SEK 45 M and year-on-year currency effects of approximately SEK 36 M. Even excluding these factors, the margin improved by more than 1 percentage point to 14.3%, which reflects the sustained positive underlying performance of the operations.

"The improvement was driven by a favorable mix, price discipline and productivity improvements. Improved profitability, together with a positive development in working capital, contributed to strong cash flow," says Perjos.

In the latter part of the quarter Getinge initiated the launch of Cardiohelp II – the medtech company's next generation ECLS therapy platform – in CE countries and Hong Kong. Customer feedback has been positive.

"We also received 510(k) clearance for a new Edi catheter, which can be used together with our ventilators to support breathing for premature infants weighing as little as 500-1000 grams," tells Perjos. "It is increasingly important for us as a trusted partner in healthcare to show how our solutions can help increase productivity."

During the quarter, Torin Plan Optimizer launched, an AI-powered system designed to manage resources more efficiently and make surgical workflows more predictable during surgeries.

"Getinge's greatest strength lies in the work my colleagues around the world do every day in close collaboration with our customers. Against the backdrop of an uncertain global environment, I am therefore particularly pleased that we have achieved all-time highs in both customer satisfaction and employee engagement. At the same time, our ongoing dialogue with customers supports our decision to maintain our outlook for organic net sales growth of 3–5% for the full year 2026," concludes Perjos.

July-September 2026 in brief

- Net sales increased organically by 2.1% (9.5) and the order intake rose by 2.6% organically (4.7)

- Adjusted gross profit amounted to SEK 4,343 M (4,051) and the margin was 51.4% (49.2)

- Adjusted EBITA was SEK 1,278 M (1,079) and the margin 15.1% (13.1)

- Adjusted earnings per share amounted to SEK 3.10 (2.42)

- Free cash flow amounted to SEK 1,302 M (793)

CEO Comment

We are making solid progress on our strategic priorities. Our cost savings program remains on track, recent product launches are receiving encouraging customer feedback, and we are broadening our presence across sales channels. Although these measures have not yet fully offset current market headwinds, they reinforce our confidence in the Group's long-term competitiveness and prospects.

Financial performance summary

Net sales were SEK 9,012m (9,204), representing an organic decline of 5% in the quarter, primarily driven by continued weakness in Europe. Organic sales in the Husqvarna Forest & Garden Division declined by 10%, sales in the Husqvarna Construction Division were unchanged, while the Gardena Division delivered solid organic growth of 8%. Performance in the Husqvarna Forest & Garden Division was significantly affected by the widespread drought across large parts of Europe and continued weak consumer demand in key markets, including Germany and France. In contrast, strong growth in the Gardena Division's Watering business highlighted the resilience of our diversified portfolio, gaining market shares in key markets, and the Husqvarna Construction Division has continued good momentum in its aftermarket business. I am also encouraged by continued growth across all three divisions in North America.

Operating income excluding IAC was SEK -246m (140), corresponding to a margin of -2.7% (1.5). The result reflected lower volumes in the Husqvarna Forest & Garden Division, an unfavorable product mix, inventory reductions and cost increases on raw materials and logistics costs. Free operating cash flow was stable at SEK 2,422m (2,423), as lower operating income was offset by changes in working capital, primarily driven by reduced inventories. We further strengthened the balance sheet, reducing net debt to SEK 9.4bn (9.9).

Executing on cost savings while navigating cost headwinds

Our transformative cost savings program remains on track to deliver SEK 3bn in gross savings by the end of 2028. Year-to-date savings reached approximately SEK 935m, including around SEK 305m in the third quarter, driven mainly by sourcing activities and personnel reductions. However, lower volumes, inventory reductions and cost headwinds continue to weigh on profitability. We are responding with targeted price increases, supply chain actions and product cost optimization, which will partly offset these pressures, although near-term headwinds are expected to remain.

We are advancing our asset-light strategy through further outsourcing initiatives. We will transfer production of selected Husqvarna-branded battery handheld products from Europe to Asia, using both our own facilities and external partners to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

In addition, the ongoing discontinuation of the stone diamond tool business in the Construction Division, the phase-out of our Brastad component factory in the Husqvarna Forest & Garden Division and relocation of selected activities within Gardena's European manufacturing network are progressing according to plan.

Unlocking the next phase of robotics growth

Our robotic lawn mowing business faced a difficult quarter, with adverse weather, competitive headwinds, and elevated channel partner inventories in Europe constraining demand for Husqvarna- and Gardena-branded products. Although recent performance has fallen short of expectations, we remain the clear market leader and we are confident in our strategy and longer-term development.

The strategic review of the Powered Garden BPU in the Gardena Division is ongoing and we aim to provide an update in the beginning of next year. Our priorities in the Husqvarna Forest & Garden Residential Robotics BPU include expanding our retail footprint and product range across price points and channels, strengthening the robotics organization and development model.

During the quarter, the US became the largest market in terms of sales for our Professional Robotics BPU, driven mainly by continued growth in the golf segment. Upcoming product launches and broader US distribution are expected to further strengthen our competitive position next season. We are also encouraged to be the first robotics company to receive conditional approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for foreign-produced advanced robotic devices in the US market.

Building a stronger, more competitive Husqvarna Group

We are accelerating change across the Group to create a leaner, more agile and asset-light organization. By challenging established ways of working, simplifying operations and acting decisively, we are strengthening competitiveness and profitability in the longer-term. Significant work remains, but I am confident we are moving in the right direction.

When consumer sentiment recovers, particularly in Europe, we will be well positioned to capture growth and improve earnings.
